Trigun is certainly in my top 5 favorite anime list! Thanks for starting up a thread about this unreleased/lost game. I remember when I read that there was going to be a PS2 game back in the day online and I was so hyped. I hope we can find out more about this game. It’s very true that Trigun never found mainstream success in Japan, however I’m under the impression that it’s more like a cult classic. There are several Japanese fan-sites and it’s notable that the reason that the manga got a continuation (Trigun Maximum) and a movie (Badlands Rumble) is certainly because of the international success of Trigun but primarily because of the Japanese fanbase of Yasuhiro Nightow’s work and also fans of Guns & American Westerns in Japan (it’s pretty niche but they do exist.) So, while the average Japanese anime fan may not know what Trigun is there’s an underground fanbase.
It makes sense that the figures that were released will give us an idea of what the character models in the game would have looked like. Here’s what I stumbled upon:

Here are all search results for 「トライガン・ザ・プラネット・ガンスモーク」on amiami.
Here's a Japanese Collector’s video showing the one of the TPG Vash figures up-close. He mentions the Gungrave game and is praising the quality/detail of the figure and the other items (including kuro neko who is in this set.) He mentions that they’re rare and shows something other images online doesn’t show, the back of the box! ^^: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgRw5mtYEDY He also has a video showing/reviewing the Wolfwood TPG figure: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbastJL7vb0

So that’s what I’ve found so far. I will certainly keep searching. If anyone finds something they would like me to translate I’ll do my best. :3
*Quick update: Here's a yahoo auction that shows the back of Vash's box: page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p724441765
