In early 2020, Crunchyroll announced their foray into the original content market with Crunchyroll Originals. Shows that were a part of the lineup included The God of High School, TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You, High Guardian Spice, and So I'm a Spider, So What?. But one show that was never released was an anime titled Meiji Gekken: 1874 (or as it was called in its working title, Meiji Gekken: Sword and Gun).
Sypnosis
Japan, 1870. We follow an ensemble of characters - a former samurai, a yakuza bodyguard, a devious spy and a geisha assassin - as they try to find their place in the rapidly evolving Meiji-era while escaping the sins of their pasts…Inspired by historical events. A Crunchyroll Studios Production. Coming soon on Crunchyroll. -taken from Crunchyroll's announcement
What is Known
-According to Callum May of Anime News Network, Meiji Gekken: 1874 was being produced at Crunchyroll Studios Tokyo, a venture between Crunchyroll, Yapiko Animation's Japan branch, and Studio pH president Sachiko Kondo. Other companies involved in the the anime were Tsumugi Akita Animation Lab and Inspired.
-From the same article, production of Meiji Gekken: 1874 took place at the Hicut Building in Nakano, a building that was deemed "overly expensive" and "half-empty". Crunchyroll Studios Tokyo would open in 2018 and shutter in 2020, forcing Tsumigi Animation to move to Akita to finish production of the anime.
-Known people who were attached to the project include Evan Minto (story consultant), Yann Le Gall (background director), Nassima Amir (artist), Pierre Pecoraro (background artist), and Sarah Cortina (associate producer/line producer).
What Remains
-2 seconds of Meiji Gekken: 1874 footage shown in the Crunchyroll Originals trailer. (Between 0:31-0:32)
-The Twitter and Instagram accounts, which have gone silent after the trailer was released.
-Background art used in promotional art for the series by Yann Le Gall. (Shown below)
-Background art by Nassima Amir. (Also shown below) Nassima says "Early visual dev. ideas made for Meiji Gekken : Sword and Gun, a Crunchyroll anime series that never ended up getting released."
I don't know if any footage will ever be recovered from Meiji Gekken: 1874, but I hope this information can be put to good use.
