So, this was quite a while ago, but it hasn’t been mentioned here. Someone on Reddit seems to have confirmed that this actually exists. Here’s what they said about it:
“I know this thread isn’t active, but I found myself in an Internet rabbit hole, and here we are. It’s crazy to me that there is an Internet discussion on something so obscure, that I can actually remember. I won’t claim to recall specifics, but I absolutely remember a longer version of the intro to Doug. To my memory, Doug was in a programming lineup with Salute your shorts, Hey Dude, ...maybe Clarissa explains it all... and I would watch the whole block every day. This is only relevant in as much as I could remember all of the theme tunes. I remember the long intro only being on one episode. I only remember it because I was expecting the episode to start, and the intro continued to animate. I can’t remember the content at all, but I do remember that the tune looped again. It felt ‘off’ compared to what I was used to… This was on Nickelodeon, in the summer - July or August.”
Since Doug only aired 3 times in July-August of 1991 and this person was used to seeing the standard intro, I think we can deduce that it was still used about a year after the show had premiered, if only for one episode. Whether this was the case from the start or that all of season 1 premiered with the extended intro is still unclear, however.
I'm still of the opinion that it probably aired randomly with episodes that had shorter run times. Maybe exclusively to season 1?
Weird, I was literally thinking about this thread the other day.
I'm surprised if this is truly real or not. Wouldn't more people remember it?
You never know, people said the same thing about the theme for Catdog, but it turned out there was in fact a full version of it that only ever aired ONCE on TV, so it's entirely possible Doug had a full theme that only aired a handful of times and never again.

It’s somewhat possible the extended Doug theme actually aired in a music video format like the CatDog one however the full Doug theme isn’t as long as the full CatDog theme.

I’ve looked at the time for the episodes, and there’s isn’t really that much difference.

Oh wow, really? I’m not really familiar with Catdog, but that’s interesting that there was a longer theme that only aired once. Was this when the show premiered? I personally feel like I’ve seen the uncut Doug intro, but I was born in late 1994 (after the Nickelodeon version ended) so I obviously wouldn’t have seen the show when it premiered.

I believe it aired before the show aired it's first episode.
I do remember seeing a promo on the 90s are all that that showed sing along clips from shows including doug (the killer tofu episode played) and the clip for doug was the theme song which was saying "doug" over and over again even though the theme song has always been "do do do do", even the disney version

So it was with the series premiere. That’s what we’re thinking the Doug intro was shown with, too. Someone uploaded the premiere broadcast, but the recording appears to start after the intro ends. Maybe they have it, though? We should also try to track down recordings from 1991 (when the first season was premiering) in case all of it premiered with the extended intro (the standard one has so far only confirmed to have been in use since early 1992).

Probably more likely Mandela effect but the mention of a music video triggered very vague memories of seeing from time to time the Doug intro with some extra animation showing as a promotional "music video" during a commercial break of another Nick Toon back then. They also used to show things like "Killer Tofu" and the scene where Doug fantasizes he's a rapper as "music videos". Again, could be just mandela effect and I'm just conflating it with the other music videos.
