Currently searching for 90s Doug airings on archive.org...any other places I could look for episodes?
Really hoping this isn't a Mandela effect kinda thing
The only thing I can think of is finding VHS tapes with the original episodes recorded. I kinda tried to look and see if maybe it's included on the DVDs, but nothing really says as much.
There is/was a copy of the entire premiere of Nicktoons in 1991 online, but go figure the "Doug" intro is cut out. Sigh. Apparently there was the actual premiere in the morning, and then an encore presentation later in the day. We don't know which broadcast that copy is from.

Well I personally theorize that this uncut intro might have aired more than once, and if it did, then probably with episodes that had shorter run times, or only during the first season. That being said, the original broadcast has been the only solid lead so far about it possibly airing.
I think the uncut intro was probably aired on both morning and encore, but if it was cut between the two, I'd guess that the encore broadcast would be less likely to have it, although who knows.

I always thought the Nicktoons premiered on Nick at Nite, or is that the encore presentation I’m thinking of?
It was actually hard to find specific information about the premiere itself (other than what the line up was and date), but here's a tweet with the Nick at Nite promo of the premiere:
I actually never knew the shows had a morning and evening premiere until it was mentioned.
Assuming this is real, I wonder if it was all season 1 was aired with the longer version.
I’m guessing it wasn’t. Someone on YouTube with a February 1992 recording (a few months after season 1 finished premiering) told me it had the standard intro, and it seems that Doug was still airing only on weekends at the time. If the uncut theme had aired for all of season 1’s premiered, I can only see it being “remastered” either when season 2 premiered (which wasn’t until September of 1992) or when the show started airing more frequently.
However, I think I might have actually seen an uncut version since I feel like I remember seeing Judy in the theme. Since I was born in late 1994, this could mean that the uncut opening was aired sporadically. Or maybe they decided to use for a brief period in early 1999, when the movie was being released and the Disney series was ending? If anyone has recordings from early 1999, that could at least help dispute the second theory.
...unfortunately, the recording starts right AFTER the Doug intro. So, if this exists, it's STILL lost.
EDIT: It appears this comes from a MySpleen torrent that was actually a recording of the encore broadcast of the block, shown at 8 P.M. on Nick at Nite. They actually premiered at 10 A.M. on Nickelodeon proper.
Do we know for sure that’s when the recording begins? Or did they just neglect to include the opening?

I’ve seen many VHS recordings over the years and the fade in with the artifacts usually does indicate that’s when the tape started recording.

I had a friend who also could not have seen the premiere as she was born in 93, but also could have sworn she saw the uncut opening. Which was why I suggested it might have aired randomly, and probably for episodes with shorter run times.
That being said, you bringing up the Disney version kinda makes me wonder if everyone is just getting the Disney intro mixed with the Nickelodeon one. Maybe memories are getting crossed here, wouldn't be the first time. Glad to see this thread revived though.

So should we be looking at which episodes have shorter runtimes, then? Then we’ll know which recordings anyone has that should be checked.

Couldn't hurt I suppose. Finding the original airings of the shorter episodes will be hard though. Again, it's a working theory, it would explain why some people remember it after it's premiere.

Yeah, I guess it’s not impossible. One of my recordings of Peep and the Big Wide World (one of my favorite shows) starts maybe a second before the episode begins.

I just looked on Amazon and apparently all the episodes are exactly at 24 minutes? There goes my theory out the window

That’s what I originally thought when I rewatched the intro for the first time in a while, that Judy’s appearance was in the Disney one. Except, she only appears in the crowd at the end in that one, not getting any real focus.
As for the Amazon times, yeah, I looked that up and noticed it too, but I’m thinking they’re all approximately 24 minutes, and it’s just 14 seconds that would be needed to use the full intro. If we can find the exact runtimes, that will help.
EDIT: I found this Youtube playlist which shows us the exact runtimes of most episodes.
The episodes tend to run 23:29 at shortest and 23:41 at longest; not that much difference, but like I said, adding in the full intro wouldn’t make much difference. The one exception appears to be the Christmas episode, which runs much shorter. However, since that episode would only be shown during the holidays, I think most people would remember if it had an alternate intro.

So, this was quite a while ago, but it hasn’t been mentioned here. Someone on Reddit seems to have confirmed that this actually exists. Here’s what they said about it:
“I know this thread isn’t active, but I found myself in an Internet rabbit hole, and here we are. It’s crazy to me that there is an Internet discussion on something so obscure, that I can actually remember. I won’t claim to recall specifics, but I absolutely remember a longer version of the intro to Doug. To my memory, Doug was in a programming lineup with Salute your shorts, Hey Dude, ...maybe Clarissa explains it all... and I would watch the whole block every day. This is only relevant in as much as I could remember all of the theme tunes. I remember the long intro only being on one episode. I only remember it because I was expecting the episode to start, and the intro continued to animate. I can’t remember the content at all, but I do remember that the tune looped again. It felt ‘off’ compared to what I was used to… This was on Nickelodeon, in the summer - July or August.”
Since Doug only aired 3 times in July-August of 1991 and this person was used to seeing the standard intro, I think we can deduce that it was still used about a year after the show had premiered, if only for one episode. Whether this was the case from the start or that all of season 1 premiered with the extended intro is still unclear, however.
