Anyone have a TV airing of Homeward Bound the Incredible Journey? That version of the film has a bunch of scenes that were not in the theatrical or home release, some of which are actually important to the plot. For example Kate taking the animals on a ride in her truck, which explains why when she leaves to take the horses later Chance gets all excited and thinks they're going on a car ride only for Kate to say "sorry boys not this time"(which always confused me as a kid) in reference to the ride earlier, also it removes a crucial scene that explains the whole reason why the animals ran away in the first place- there's a scene of Peter telling Shadow over the phone that he'll see him in two weeks(With Shadow somehow understanding him and being dissapointed but accepting)and only after hanging up does his stepfather mention that they have a barbecue they have to go which the kids reminds them just happens to fall on the day they were planning to go back and visit the pets, so THAT'S what Shadow was referring when he said "they've been gone WAY too long, much longer then they should've been", as otherwise that line does not really make any sense and in the released version it comes off as the animals overreacting to the family being gone for only 2 weeks, but once you realize it's longer then that, suddenly them wanting to escape and find them makes a lot more sense. Also the scene where the family is talking about the animals escaping seems to start rather abruptly, that's because there was a scene of the kids playing Nintendo(Battletoads specifically in case you were wondering) and then the family gets the news about the animals escaping and we see their reaction. Plus we also see Kate finding the second note that she wrote for Frank(which told him to look after the pets, so since he only got the first part of the note he thought Kate took the pets with her) that accidentally fell down and got missed.
Even the scenes that aren't vital to the plot would still help the film flow better, as a kid I always wondered why the scene of Chance eating the cake seemed to end up so abruptly, then I find out there's a deleted scene of Jamie washing him off with the hose, and we also get more from the old man that finds Sassy with him playing some music for her.
So if anyone has an airing of this film recorded on tape, don't throw it away!
