I used to frequent deviantart a lot as a teenager, and so I would peruse the forums to try and make friends. One day I decide, I'm going to tell a funny joke. So my subject line is: "why is 6 afraid of 7?" And then the post was: "because 7 is a sociopathic serial killer."
Everyone and their mother got so angry at me. It was just a barrage of hate messages, people telling me that I was stupid or much worse. I don't think I posted it in anything where that would have been necessarily disruptive? Probably in a general section.
Mods eventually removed it, and admonished me for making it. And to be quite honest, I still don't know WHY it made people so angry. It wasn't a moral stance, this was 2008, people were edgy as hell back then.
Honestly that's a good bait-and-switch joke. It's the kind of morbid humor I enjoy at times combined with a bit of clever anti-joke where the expected punchline isn't there.

Thanks, I think it's even funnier knowing it made people really angry on deviantart of all places.
I think it being an anti joke was probably part of the problem.

Even funnier is that people will often forget that "Why did the chicken cross the road?" is also an anti-joke. There's a setup, but no punchline, just "To get to the other side.", if that was even in the original version of the joke. It's also dark humor at that.

Funny enough, I got really into strategy guides almost as much as the games themselves. Heck, I read the entire Pokemon Gold/Silver Crystal strategy guide like 1-2 years before the actual game. I joke that a fair amount of my vocabulary originated from that guide.
And game sites like Gamefaqs were the bomb too back in the early 00s. They felt so "organic" and "fan driven" in a way that we don't see as much nowadays.
Heh I did the same thing! I had strategy guides for games like Metroid Prime(I had the 2 in 1 guide for both Fusion and Prime) and Sonic Adventure for at least a year or so before I actually bought the games. I too learned a decent amount of vocabulary from those guides, I also noticed some mistakes made in them(the Prima Guide for SA on the Dreamcast repeats one bit in Emerald Coast on another stage later on in the book).
I think I actually saw a guide to the Sonic Adventure randomly on clearance at a KBToys. While I don't remember the exact year, this would have likely been 2007 at the earliest so that was pretty surreal. I bet that one was pretty fun! Sonic Adventure has so much life, color, and energy and I imagine the guide reflects that. And awesome another person in the "I learned vocabulary from strategy guides" crew! (for the record, I learned quite a bit from gaming magazines as well, which were written at higher reading levels).

Wow I'm pretty surprised that anyone would have been offended by that kind of joke in 2008. What a bunch of joykills, I wonder if people just wanted to hate on something or someone, or dogpile on them to feel better about themselves. Kind of reminds me of when I read a book years ago on high school sociological dynamics and it talked about kids who were in the "popular group" and how they knew they could be tossed out/demoted at any time, so they would purposefully try to 'knock down" others to preserve their own status. Many of them didn't even feel GOOD about picking on others, but that was the main way to keep their spot on top.

Making people mad back in the day intentionally or not was a really fun pass time tbf.
My favorite thing to do was to go into any forum that was for a fandom and put that i thought that x character is better than beloved character and just watch the anger ensue. Starting flame wars way back when was very funny when everyone took everything so seriously.

I'd feel like I would do something where I would just post some random nonsensical bullcrap(like how there was a green bee on a pogostick that fought a blue kangaroo-flamingo hybrid in a boxing match in front of an audience of skateboarding tomato dartboards) just for giggles as well.

Not sure if anyone else would get into the newest thing on the internet and literally be over it WITHIN a week, if not a few days. I probably still have accounts hanging out somewhere that I don't even remember that I have. Some examples:
1. I started a profile with the Ham Ham Paradise forum and had a decent bit of trouble setting up an account and I have used it exactly ONCE since I got it. If anything their Tumblr is updated way more than the site OR forum. 2. I got a Deviantart at point and used it for like a couple weeks and then just fell off. I mostly used it for Pokemon fanart of various ships and once I got through those, I just wasn't interested much anymore. 3. I joined some libertarian forum/blog, that lasted like a couple weeks. I continued perusing the site and still do occasionally, but never bothered beyond 2-3 replies. 4. Also too, too many educational sites since I worked in the education field/industry for a while. So much "wannabe tech," and 95% of it unused to boot. 5. I don't even know if those Facebook book groups that I liked back in like 2008-2009 even still exist anymore, but if they do, I'm probably still in them.
Who knows, might still have some college profiles hanging around while we are at it.
I remember back in Grade 2, back before they made the big change from clunky windows computer towers to chromebooks, our elementary school had a big computer lab. I remember going online and playing a flash game called Mutilate a Doll 2, which was basically a more primitive version of People Playground.
I was just watching StampyLongHead and ZackScott, and playing flash games on sketchy websites.
Years later, when I was in my class, I got bored and went on a flash archive website which wasn't blocked and had plenty of games.
I discovered a game I forgot about for years called "La Casa de Dora" which I have a distinct memory of playing, but forgot about for the longest time.

I swear that those "primitive" online games had more character than the generic gazillion mobile games we see today. Especially the ones just made for giggles by random people.
Back in my school years, I would go on sites like Ssega.com, Internet Archive, Atarimania, among others & play some retro games on there.
It's just a shame that I didn't know emulators existed until college. I missed out on a lot for so long. My partner has an extra solid game collection so it's not bad anymore, but then, nope.

Meanwhile, our school lab computers (shared K-12) AND laptops (which were also shared K-12 and rarely even allowed out) could barely handle text-based websites and Word haha! I don't even know if the laptops had wifi or internet connection, come to think of it. All that to say it was a memorable time. I was able to sneak book forums though so it's all good. Flash really WAS the old internet, a time I greatly miss now. Anyone just made their own game, and you got so many wild memories out of it vs. the millionth generic puzzle mobile game.

I grew up with both, weird flash games I probably shouldn't have been playing, and the millionth generic puzzle game.
