I feel like the least corporate film they made (that wasn't Mario) was Migration because they tried doing something kinda original for once. All of their original movies are Despicable Me-based, or are something the general public likes. For example, what do a lot of people like? Pets. What's something else that a lot of people like? American Idol. They made movies based off of both of these things.
I kinda wish they didn't have such stale ideas and they'd just do what Pixar and Dreamworks do and make movies based off of original ideas.
Even Pixar and Dreamworks are guilty of unoriginal crap. Sure, they don't, as you put it, just make movies about what the general public likes, but, and this ties-into the point of this thread, they have tendency to milk the crap out of their own animated franchises. Pixar could've easily ended Toy Story as a great trilogy, but no, they had to make Toy Story 4, and Lightyear, and now they have a Toy Story 5 in the works. And do I really need to remind everyone of how much Dreamworks milked the Shrek franchise? Heck, not only did they make a new Shrek movie a couple years back with Puss In Boots 2 (though, to be fair, while I haven't seen it, a lot of people seemed to like it,) but there's still rumors there's gonna be a Shrek 5.
Also, while we're on the subject of CGI animated kids' movie, we don't need another Ice Age movie. I like Ice Age, but did Ice Age 1 really need five freakin' sequels?!
Also I will say it's not just American viewers, people overseas love that stuff too.
Oh Shrek 5 is no rumor, it's confirmed:
