I'm gonna say this, I did not care for 2001 A Space Odyssey. I should watch it again, and I do understand why it was influential....but God does it drag.
Agreed 100%, and screw anyone who tries to give the "oh you need to watch it more then once to "get it" excuse, a truly good film should be enjoyable the FIRST time you see it and multiple viewings should not be required, I ain't got that kind of time to waste.
Influential does not always mean good.
I was never forced to watch Kubrick thank fuck, I tried 2001 more out of curiosity then anything else and even with fast-forwarding it at 2x speed it still bored the piss out of me(if I tried watching it at normal speed there's no way I could've made it).
Thoughts on blade runner? That's another one people say really drags, though I don't see it personally. I like when movies take their time and breathe, especially in a fast paced clime like the one we have now
"oooh, you're a- a freaked out child in the woods..."

I love Blade Runner. An 80s neo-noir scifi that is visually stunning. I do have to be in the right mood to watch it though. The new one took me awhile to come around too. I gotta admit, it kinda ruins the mystery of the first iteration though.

Yeah the consensus is super polarized on 2049 still. Personally though, I really liked it, and I think I'm overdue for a rewatch.

There was an indie movie I saw a dozen or so years ago that came on one of those low cost DVD 'action movie pack' bundles. I forget the name of it, probably still have it somewhere, but anyway the entire movie is about this hitman being betrayed by his own agency. The movie was hard to sit through because interspersed with brief scenes of badly written dialogue and low budget fight scenes, the star of the film just sits in the desert MANY times in silence while the camera just sits in focus on him, adding nothing to the plot. I'm guessing the director wanted to go for some artsy idea but the execution was just downright boring. Maybe why I forgot the name of the film, it's so horribly bad.
Another one that I do remember the name to is Starship Rising, a very horribly put together indie sci-fi movie that was trying to be a rip-off of Star Wars and the modern Battlestar Galactica. The dialogue is bad, the acting is bad, the CG is bad, and the big bad of the movie is trying to be a rip-off of the Emperor from Star Wars who whispers every line of his dialogue so low that I had to turn the volume up very loud and still couldn't understand him. This movie was so bad I could only stand watching it for 30 minutes before shutting it off and selling it to a local comic shop dealer.
I have a number of those action DVD packs and that one does sound vaguely familiar. "Reflex Action" maybe? That was a pretty cheap movie I remember being mostly set in the desert.

I think it's fine but not amazing(wish that one fight scene in the apartment hadn't been cut from the film)sequel is better IMO

Idk, I liked The Shining as a kid. I haven't watched it in years though. Was thinking of going to my local theater where they're doing a double feature of Psycho and The Shining.
Never liked Shining, it misses the point of the book by making Jack crazy right from the start so his descent into madness has very little impact and Nicholson is so over-the-top I found him more laughable then intimidating. Only thing interesting about that movie for me is my hopes that the removed epilogue with the kid getting adopted gets found one of these days(it played in theaters for like a week when it first came out and Kubrick removed it from all future showings and releases after people like Roger Ebert criticized it)
The Idol is so unpleasant to watch. It tries so hard to be a commentary but comes off as someone's weird fetish material.
I thought that show as interesting but didn't quite live up to it's full potential, it's nowhere near as awful as critics say. You want a truly bad mainstream show try The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer. How that thing ever got greenlit is a true mystery to me.
I also fucking LOATHE Touched By an Angel, how that treacly maudlin piece of shit show lasted for so long is beyond me.
I think my mother maybe liked TBaA at one point? That said, I think a number of people here in the states "liked" it just because it was one of the few shows families "could" watch together based on ultra strict religious codes and beliefs. There was a LOT of panic about immoral content on TV throughout the 80s, 90s, and well into the 2000s so I think a few people just "tricked" themselves into trying to "liking" super babyish, low stakes, squeaky clean wholesome shows otherwise they would have to watch like...Friends (gasp). These are the kinds of people who likely made TbaA go as long as it did.

My mom loved that show too, why was a true mystery to me. Funnily enough that show would be considered "woke" today by most right-wing jesus freaks due to it starring non-white characters.
I disagree on Friends though as it was one of the first shows to feature a lesbian couple who were actually happy and didn't end up miserable or having something bad happen to them like was common for TV at the time so i'd argue it did at least take some risks and I do think it was a success for a reason(plus it had quite a lot of sex jokes so "Wholesome" definitely is not a word i'd ever use to describe it). TBA though definitely only could've been a success during the 90s, it's so maudlin and disgusting it makes 7th Heaven look downright edgy by comparison, at least that show had the guts to dedicate an episode to missing children(with several photos of real-life missing kids shown)and also one talking about the holocaust.
Don’t know why but the short film Bao made by Disney. It seems all innocent but the mom eats the god damn kid I get it’s a metaphor but still me and my dad hate it with a passion. It came on when we were at the movie theater before incredibles 2 we were gonna walk out.

Yeah, kind of weird in hindsight that the idea of having a diverse cast of angels could be considered too "woke" today by the same audience who ate it up in the 90s. Almost like these things go in cycles...
Haha, not saying anything bad about Friends there, just that it was considered a "no go show" by a lot of 90s religious conservatives since it portrayed "sinful living" (I remember complaints about it well into the 2000s) I can't help if wonder if a number of the those same haters and ranters were just jealous and bitter that they never got to live that kind of life (IE instead, they got tied down early with miserable job, marriage, kids, etc.) and were just lashing out in response. Who knows. I am ambivalent towards it personally since I haven't watched much of it.
In terms of other media I think is deplorable, Eragon is especially awful, both as an adaptation and as a stand alone movie. You can tell it was made during that "QUICK WE NEED TO FIND THE NEXT/OUR OWN HARRY POTTER" film phase that a lot of companies went through.

Yeah that makes sense, jealousy does seem a likely factor.
I actually bought a ticket for Eragon just so I could sneak in to see Primeval(as I was underage at the time). I did like the song Avril Lavigne did for the film but that's about it.
Another laughably bad film trying to be the next Harry Potter is The Seeker: The Dark is Rising, that thing came out and flopped so bad most people haven't even heard of it.
