had a TikTok account for almost 4 years with 2,000 followers and took all of my posts down recently. it's just not fun, there's too much judgment online

Yes, I admittedly bed rot during the weekends while doomscrolling. Even though I know it's bad for my mental health, I keep reading them anyways because of the dopamine.

I kind of do the same at my desktop PC. I'm trying to find other healthier alternatives like going to the gym.

I would but I don't want to get into the expensive racket that is gym memberships so I just distract myself with other things like podcasts and whatnot.

There are other cheaper alternatives to gyms like getting into offline hobbies like board games, learning to draw, etc.

Or playing video games and reading books in my case.

I'm not sure if this counts as social media, but I've become addicted to YouTube videos a bit too much. Watching their videos take a large part of my daily schedule.
One thing I will try to do besides going to the gym is getting a portable cassette player and listen to many tapes, not just music tapes. Maybe going to estate sales to find other retro things to add to my collection.

I have the same problem! I spend a ridiculous amount of time on youtube
What's also difficult for me is seeing official accounts like political figures, gaming companies and more use social media like Twitter still to announce things. Even though I have no interest in using Twitter I still have to "use" it to follow updates and news.
A number of my fave Youtubers ONLY use Twitter X for their social media, and it about kills me inside to be constantly missing out on stuff by them (news, comments, pictures, commentary, etc.) as a result of wanting to altogether avoid that stupidly addictive, doom-scrolled, hateful time-sucker cesspool of hive and villainy. Sucks.

I feel you. I sometimes get "antsy" to where I am using Youtube around the clock (when not at work) and that isn't healthy for the mind, even a fully grown mind like my own, and EVEN if the videos are far more substantial and longer form than reuploaded Tiktoks @_@ I try to justify it by saying I would be watching this stuff on TV or reading it in newspapers/magazines anyway, but that's just not comparable IMO (mainly because of the "instant access pitfall" that permeates not just Youtube, but social media and phone culture in general) Part of me also wants to go retro and make do with old-school CD players, Ipods, crappy quality radios, etc. like I enjoyed in my youth. I need to develop an actual "delayed gratification drive" again!
Good idea to go shopping and see what you can find!

Seen people do that with Instagram too! It reaches a certain point where it's just "not fun anymore" but then FOMO and the "sunk cost fallacy" can hit hard. At least it hits hard when I consider deleting any of my social media, sigh.
Good for you for not just staying in the trenches though, and accepting that the site was hurting more than encouraging you!
Said it before, but I will say it again, I miss when social media was just 1-3 sites on a computer, and that was it. It was just enough to be enjoyable as "part of your life" but not enough to completely consume one's life (voluntarily and involuntarily). Hurts my brain to try to keep up with now, even after I deleted, deactivated, removed, or just stopped using multiple profiles.
I have noticed that whenever I'm away from YouTube or online access for a long period of time, I feel anxious at first but later I feel calmer. My perception of time changes as well, but for the better. Time doesn't seem to be rushing to me.
