I miss the slew of niche flash games and RP/RPG sites that I used to devote a lot of time to back in the day. Sure, they never really went away, but I think it was one of those "you had to be there" when it was still fresh at the time. This also includes things that are purely defunct now, like the message boards on IMDb and groups on MySpace and Yahoo. Now that those are all gone (I think groups stopped being a thing on Myspace back in 2010), the next best thing you have is Reddit for catch-all stuff unless you're getting incredibly niche - then you just have to hope you can find a community.
But games? Oh, games! I know with some, it would feel like pulling teeth to find anyone who remembers half of the things I played; be it The Last Stand games or the various ones on Myspace (like Vampires and Werewolves). There's also off the beaten path ones like Vampires: The Dark Alleyway, where you're a new vampire and you go around the map feeding on others and trying to survive without being hunted down. Nowadays, stuff like that either still exists by the skin of its teeth, is broken, or riddled with viruses and a mess to navigate.
I want to say there were RP dedicated chatrooms on YIM, which I have faint memories of. The main RP site I was on was a rather small one, and I can't say for sure how I found it. But it was centered around vampires and werewolves (of course), and it was fairly laidback all things considered. Thankfully the crowd we had was small enough so we didn't have to worry about rooms getting too crowded.
Oh, and speaking of which, does anyone else remember how "back in the day", if you wanted to play online mode for some games, there was usually a cap limit for how many users you could have in a single space? Territory War: Online was like that, which made leveling up and gaining more exclusive access to certain servers all the more rewarding. Now with MMORPGs, that doesn't seem like a major thing anymore (assuming Ventrilo is dead).
