The Lost Media Wiki has done a great job of finding lost media. We have found many things such as "The Electric Piper" and "Cracks". But, once found, these videos are not being preserved properly. They can still disappear. As an example, take this scenario, I want to watch "The Electric Piper" so I go to YouTube. There, I find that the video has been taken down due to a copyright strike. The company listed is not affiliated with the production, distribution, or the creation of the media. Instead, it is a random copyright troll. I have an idea to remedy this.
My first idea is to "back up the media" this means to download the media from the service in question. This is to prevent company from censoring it by filing a false DMCA claim. There are many ways that this can be done. If we all have a copy of a piece of found media, then we can hopefully remedy any chance of the it disappearing. There is also another way that a piece of media can be lost. This I call it "treasure map lost" This means that a piece of media is still on the internet, but most of the links to it lead to 404 errors and whatnot. The links being the map and since the map leads to the wrong "treasure".
My next proposal that I have is to re post the heck out of the that is considered found media. Re-post it to as many sites as possible. That way if there is a copyright strike against the original or something else happens, there are still copies of it available. This way, all of the eggs aren't in one basket and its still accessible.
My third idea is to back up media that you like even if its NOT lost. It reduces the risk of it actually becoming lost. That way if it does something does happen, someone can just re post it online. It will also reduce the time span that it is actually is "lost media" This will allow us to allocate more time on the next "Cracks" or "A Day with Spongebob SquarePants". This can even have a benefit to you. If you periodically download YouTube videos for example, you can have a hard drive full of them to watch on a road trip. That way you can still have something to entertain you even if you don't have an internet connection.
My final idea is to periodically check on the status of a piece of found media. `This will tell us if it has been lost once again. It will also increase the quality and the accessibility of the wiki. It will do this by uncovering lots of broken links, pages that "need work" and "found" lost media.
With these ideas in mind, let us create a better wiki for all users. One that will be informative, helpful and easy to use.
