After watching this documentary about one of my favorite authors; Anne McCaffrey, I was intrigued by the animation shown at around 7:07 to 7:48.:
The credits mentions “Dragonsdawn animation courtesy of Lex Nakashima”. I thought it was odd that there was no animation studio mentioned or really any other credits regarding the clips shown. Like many other fans of Anne McCaffrey’s books I found the prospect of the series being adapted for television or movies to be interesting, and at the height of Pern’s popularity it made sense that an animated adaptation would be the way to go.
In posting this thread at the very least I’d like to gleam more information about this animation and the studio behind it. It would also be great to find some animation cels, storyboards etc. I’ve been looking for a way to possibly contact Lex Nakashima but haven’t found any direct way get in contact. I’d prefer not to send e-mails or DMs to just anyone, any suggestions?
Has anyone tried contacting potential employees of the studio?
I haven't been able to find a studio to contact, the only name mentioned in regards to the animation is Lex Nakashima. The only way I can think of to find the specific Lex Nakashima mentioned would be to look on linkedin or something like that but I haven't had any luck finding a Lex Nakashima that worked in animation.
I got in contact with the Jewel Riders Archive back when I worked on the now completed search for Saban’s Tenko and the Guardians of the Magic. The Jewel Riders Archive has a blog post documenting how Princess Gwenevere (A.k.a Starla) and the Jewel Riders started as an adaptation of the Dragonriders of Pern, however by the end of development so much had been changed that any resemblance to Pern was gone and thus Jewel Riders became it’s own thing and not an adaptation.
The art style of the animation shown in the above documentary is totally different than how Jewel Riders looks. Also, as far as I know Lex Nakashima did not work on the Jewel Riders.
The closest thing that I’ve seen to this animation is the animatics/illustrations that were used in the Dragon Riders: Chronicles of Pern video game: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6o_ouw0Q4gc

Oh yeah, that happens a lot. Some things start out as one thing then once they come out, they're a completely different thing. I believe Star Wars was kind of an example of that.
