I watched this video by a youtuber called "bekindrewind," and they said something that really struck me. "Streaming does not mean accessibility." And it was about how a streaming service that hosted lesser known movies, older movies, was shut down because it wasn't turning a profit. And then I thought of that Spongebob episode that was taken down because of the stupid panty raid joke, and it occurred to me the only way to watch that episode now is off of a DVD. And then my fiancé goes on about how he wants a PS5 without a disk because it's cheaper, and I think that's an awful idea.It lowkey dawned on me that the golden age of owning media had gone by us so quickly. DVD boxsets with bonus content is a thing of the past. We're not gonna get artist commentary over the content, we're less likely to see deleted scenes, and those dumb DVD games are not gonna go beyond the disk. It's insane. Media is going to be suppressed so much more now that a lot of us are dependent on streaming.
Streaming is definitely a mixed bag. It's great when it works, but stuff gets pulled from Netflix and Amazon all the time. Episodes get pulled for asinine reasons (the D&D episode of Community because someone wore blackface to be a dark elf.) Movies get edited with no way to see the originals (Disney+ covering a girl's butt in "Splash" with digitally extended hair.) Classic films like "Gone With The Wind" are just one asshole on Twitter away from getting pulled or edited. And yeah, we will never get access to deleted scenes, director's commentary tracks or making-of featurettes again. I may have been the only one, but I loved listening to the commentary tracks--I always found them very illuminating into the creative process.
The masses may not care, but film buffs ought to mourn the slow decline of physical media.
Films have this effect too. Have DVDs, VCDs, or MovieCDs of those movies? Well, sooner or later, disc rot will effect them, & effect them DANGEROUSLY if not protected well. It doesn't matter if you safely put it in a neat case, it's bound to happen at some point, though the worse you're with them, the faster the process of rotting will happen. Making matters worse, people like Yesterworld Entertainment said that Disney realized that DVDs "don't wear down" like VHS tapes, but considering what I've said before, they do wear down, AND THEY WELL.
