Although if Penis is a sex film, then chances are AJ Rose isn't this person's real name.
I dont know if its a "sex film" since Ive given this thread all my sources, I know only as much as you. I certainly imagined that could be a possibility given the title but considering its description and short runtime I figured it could go either way.
I wanna know more about the director too but can't find a thing yet
Yeah the internet doesn't provide much info on this AJ Rose person. I mean there could be a ton of differing reasons why that's the only film to their name. Or maybe their filmography just hasn't been discovered yet.
it’s insanely bizarre that the film apparently came out in 1965
Well, yes and no. The late 60s was the beginning of the Golden Age of Porn that would lead into the "Porn Chic" genre in the 70s. The invention of the birth control bill, and relaxation of social taboos in general at the time, made sex an intriguing subject for filmgoers. There were mainstream movies loaded with sexual innuendo like Barbarella. And there were imported foreign films which broached the subject, like Femina Ridens. And finally there were softcore pornos that depicted the act like Radley Metzger's early work, from Therese and Isabelle through The Lickerish Quartet. In the 70s, the softcore style gave way to more explicit faire like Deep Throat and The Opening of Misty Beethoven.
So with that context in mind, its not too crazy that something like Penis got made. Though it was definitely a few years earlier than any other film I just listed.
This was the information sheet from AFI's database which the representative kindly provided in her reply. The second page is blank.
Seems pretty cut and dry that it's a sex film. Also I dunno how I kept missing the JR. in the name, but now I'm thinking I did find the guy's obituary because one of them was a JR, so I'm guessing he didn't do anything else of note in the film world.

I think we can safely assume he probably didn't do much. We can also probably assume this film didn't make a big splash or it would be better remembered. It was almost certainly an underground independent film considering the lack of promotional material or even any real info floating around today.
For me, the biggest revelations in the AFI database is that this movie originally came out in 1965 as a 45 minute short called Penis and then was re-released in 1967 retitled as 1967 with about 15 minutes of footage cut out! That is a huge piece of info. I've visited the Film-Makers' Cooperative website and since they list 1967 as in their collection, that still means even if they share it we're still missing 15 minutes of footage from the original release.
Also I found it shocking that the Summary section literally says nothing of the precise nature of the film can be determined. This is AFI, and even they couldn't find anything out besides the bare bones, this film is so forgotten.

I'm kinda wondering if the film reel has ever been digitized either. If they find that reel what does that mean really? I know we have to wait to hear back from them, but how will it be viewed without physically having the reel? I kinda have a feeling the original version with the cut 15 minutes will remain lost, something AJ probably had at some point. Even in the digital age, keeping track of cut versions of your film is hard. I guess whatever theater the film initially premiered at might still have it, if they still exist?
Im not sure which cinema it premiered at. Maybe if we looked through old newspapers from NY circa 1965 we might see an ad.
I agree that cut footage is probably lost forever, but one can certainly hope.
Could be possible anybody on the crew had an original copy, which would most likely be the editor (if AJ didn't edit it himself), so there's definitely hope. I think combing through old newspaper ads is a good idea though, it could even just give us more info on the nature of the film.
This is off topic but the title of this thread is perfect for getting the attention of users that would be interested in finding this “film”
Thanks, that was my intention.
I'm not sure if the quotes around "film" are meant to question its status as a movie due to the length or subject matter. But either way I think anything shot on film during the Golden Age of Porn counts as a legitimate movie worthy of preservation. Once you get to the '80s with the shot-on-video faire then the resources required to track down the huge breadth of material (and bad quality craftsmanship present) makes the endeavor of preservation questionable. But just because a film depicts the act of lovemaking doesn't make it any less worthy as a work of art, whether it's a certain person's cup of tea or not.
I tried searching for the word "penis" between June 1 and July 31 of 1965 on a website that catalogs tons of old New York newspapers, which is not something I expected to spend my Saturday afternoon doing. I got 39 results but unfortunately all I got were mentions of Peru, people named Perry, and other similar looking words since the scanned word recognition isn't perfect.
I'm not sure a sex film, especially one with a title as unsubtle as this, would fly in a newspaper back then.
EDIT: Searching with the director's name brings up an insane amount of results since it finds any newspaper page with the word "Rose" plus the letters "A" and "J" on it. The lowest I can get it is 240 pages, and I'm sure a majority of them will be false positives.
ANOTHER EDIT: "AJ Rose film" managed to bring it down to 31 pages but as expected, none of them were relevant.

I love nyshistoricnewspapers. I did give that and a few other sites like Fulton History and the California Digital Newspaper Collection a try, but I'm not surprised in the least that these didn't really give many results.
That said though, I do have a 1950's pornographic film reel in my posession, and I do remember seeing a text page upon looking the name of the film up. I've since learned that these text pages on the Internet Archive are the generated texts to books and the likes with scans of materials, so I'll give that lead a shot to see if I see mention of the film there.
Quick update on the post above. I took a look at mention of the film I had, and found results for a Frolic Magazine. While the result I had on the Internet Archive was from 1958, the magazine was actually still in publication in 1965, and lists many films of such nature. Since not all of the issues of Frolic on the IA have the auto-generated text, I'm going to look through and see if I can't come across the film's title in the sale listings.
I took a look at the magazines as well as other similar publications in the collection said magazine was in and while there were many ads for films, Penis was not one of them. Heck, the word penis itself was surprisingly scarce in any of the magazines I could do text searches on.
Mind you, I did only check publications from 1965 and it's entirely possible that the film could have been made in '65, but distributed to the public in '66, so I might check that later.
