A few bootleggers back then transferred and/or ripped the LaserDisc releases of the 1993 Definitive Collection and the 1997 Special Editions back in the late 1990s up until 2004, when there weren't official Star Wars DVDs yet, but even those LaserDisc transfers weren't even good to begin with, and the cover and disc art often got washed out & badly compressed.
Here's a link to a website related to Star Wars on home video:
Releasing the sequel trilogy the way they did may have been pretty disrespectful to Lucas, but as Bob Iger's said, it was still legal because it was never officially signed off on. Since they have no qualms about upsetting Lucas, it's likely that the lack of release of the originals IS in fact a legally binding arrangement.

Actually a different company owns the rights to the original cuts for another 2-3 years. I forget the companies name but ive seen like 4 youtube videos on it last year
Perhaps you're referring to Fox, who owns the distribution rights to the original Star Wars indefinitely? Seems like a moot point after they got acquired by Disney. At least I hope the rights are all under one roof now.
Heck, even Nathan Butler, the creator of the From The Star Wars Home Video Library, did a huge job to warn people about bootleg 6-film DVD saga sets online.
As Nathan Butler said, "they get rid of the old version, as far as the marketplace is concerned, they sell exclusively the new version, right."
So therefore, the only High Definition version of the Star Wars original theatrical versions is definitely Harmy's Despecialized Editions, but those are fan restorations, so they don't count as official releases.
So therefore, the Unaltered releases are unrereleasable to this very day since 1997 (or 2011 if you count the 2006 GOUT DVD), and will never be put on Internet Archive for video streaming even for preservation or archival purposes (as putting films still in copyright on Internet Archive is illegal).

Lucas is just the type of person who is never satisfied with their work, even after completion. So I suppose it makes sense that he would edit and edit and edit and toss aside anything that doesn't satisfy his insatiable desire for perfection, even if he decides to wait decades before suddenly deciding that it's just not perfect enough.

Neither TBS or Ted Turner are likely going to own the copyright of the original theatrical versions of Star Wars. TBS currently holds and/or held the television airing rights of the Six films until 2024, and Ted Turner is not likely going to acquire the unaltered versions at all. So therefore neither TBS or Ted Turner are the copyright holders of the original theatrical versions of Star Wars, Because the former is owned by WarnerMedia while Ted Turner works for Warner Bros for the latter.
So copyright transferring of the original theatrical versions of Star Wars is never going to happen, don't even think about who owns the copyright of the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars original trilogy.

So therefore, there's no point in releasing them on this Wiki's Discord server. I always wanted to see them fully restored officially, but just like Duke Nukem Forever when that was in development by 3D Realms from 1997 until 2009 (most famously the 2001 build of that game), Star Wars Episodes IV, V, & VI from their original releases (1977, 1980, & 1983) are just DOOMED from rerelease & official restoration (non-fan edit effort) from the start.
So there you go, an official restoration of the original theatrical versions is never going to see the light of day, so just give up on an official restored release.
The film has been painstakingly restored by Mike Verta in 4K from every possible film source available. youtu.be/G3W_O-tp0_g I had previously forgotten about it after his Vimeo went dormant, but he hasn't abandoned the project. It was well received when pitched to executives at Disney, but there's really no indication on the status of an official release. In fact there's really not much we can do as fans besides letting Disney/Fox know there's interest in this project.
Personally, fan restorations never really did it for me since they're usually cobbled together from post-Special Edition sources that were digitally composited. I want to see the originals again, but I also want them to look nothing short of fantastic. I think they deserve that at the very least.
