Learning a new language opens you to other cultures, other people, makes you discover things previously inaccessible...
Like new communities on that obscure hobby of yours! Like non-localized video games! Like non-translated episodes of your favorite cancelled foreign show!
I am French. I have learned English all throughout school, and only perfected it in my early-mid teens.
In high school, we would have to choose between either Spanish or German classes... I took Spanish, which was the "easiest" option.
Those were not easy classes, however! I don't exactly have good memories of that time.
In the last decade, I tried to learn Japanese so I could read exclusive manga, play exclusive video games and watch unsubbed exclusive anime. I know the basics and a number of words, but the language is very difficult to learn, especially a large amount of vocabulary, special sentences and kanji (Chinese characters used in Japanese).
So I would begin... eventually give up because it's too overwhelming... try again later... so on.
In the last years, I am also trying to learn Italian, because I discovered many interesting Italian comics, a lot of them exclusive Disney comics featuring Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse; my childhood was FILLED with reading French-translated Disney comics from Italy.
Because Germany also seems to be in touch with specific nerdy subculture communities (like point-and-click adventure games, to the point it led to a cancellation of an Indiana Jones game), I am also trying to learn a bit of German. Kinda tough!
Oh, and I am also going back to Spanish too, considering I was already advanced in it for dozens of years.
Yup... that's a lot, maybe... but I am trying to learn a bit everyday...
I have a book called Japanese for Beginners... and the DuoLingo app.
How about you? Are you trying to learn new languages?
