What languages are you learning? (+ maybe help others learn)

i only know how to say "I don't speak spanish" in spanish (Me no hablo espanol)

I took three years of American Sign Language, and got straight A's the whole time, but sadly I still don't really know shit. The first year I felt like I was actually learning stuff, but after that we got a new teacher, and no more learning happened from that point on. The new teacher was fluent in ASL but she was only used to teaching elementary school (they brought her in as a long-term sub, but ended up not being able to find anyone else), so she couldn't really control the class. Most days we ended up either doing nothing or doing something extremely easy, like having 4 days to work on a 6-line dialogue about vacations. Really nice and cool person but bad teacher. I knew less at the end of my third year than I did at the end of my first.

Before that, I took French... and halfway through my second year I said "Fuck this". I'm generally horrible at learning languages, and French is a pretty hard one compared to something like Spanish (learned this the hard way), so after one awful night where I stayed up late to finish a French project and literally ended staying up until the time school started the next day, AND I was still only half done with it, I knew it was time for a switch. So I am lately going back to learn Japanese. A fun way to progress is to try translating some video game screenshots!

Something very simple...

Japanese language uses:
-A regular alphabet called "hiragana". Example: うしなった (ushinatta, "lost")
-A secondary alphabet called "katakana" used for special words, such as foreign names.　Example: メディア ("media")
That makes うしなったメディア ("lost media")
-Kanji are Chinese-originated characters that stand in for some words. Example: instead of just writing うしなった, I can also write 失った (the "失" replaces "うしな"). That'd make 失ったメディア.
Kanji tend to be difficult even for the Japanese. So sometimes, especially in youth-oriented media, there are hiragana transcripts over the kanji.
There is literally more than a thousand Kanji to learn. However, Kanji can be practical so as to spot and identify a word/concept in a text, title, sign or logo.

So the girl introduces herself. She uses a very simple sentence:

私 - わたし - (わ: Wa, た: Ta, し:Shi) - Watashi: "Me", "I"
の - no: "of" , " 's "
Watashi no: "My"

私の

名前 - なまえ - (な: Na, ま: Ma, え: E) - Namae: "Name" (yes, it sounds similar by coincidence)
名 (な/Na) means "name, fame" and 前 (まえ/Mae) means "in front". "Namae" specifically refer to a person's name.

Watashi no namae: "My name"
わたし の なまえ
私の名前

は is normally pronounced Ha. But in this exceptional case, it is pronounced Wa.
It means something like "as for...", "about..." or "concerning..." referring to the subject that was just mentioned.

Watashi no namae wa: "As for my name..." / "My name is..."
わたし の なまえ は
私の名前は

安田 is her surname, which is in Kanji. 安 means "peace, easiness, cheapness". 田 means "rice field" and is often found in Japanese surnames. (such as Honda: 本田)
安田 - やすだ - is pronounced Yasuda. (や: Ya, す: Su, だ: Da)

さつき (さ:Sa, つ:Tsu, き:Ki) - Satsuki is her first name.
In Japanese, you say the first name after the surname when saying someone's name.
Note that her name is in hiragana. Using hiragana tends to give the name a "gentler", "simpler" and "accessible" feel.

Watashi no namae wa Yasuda Satsuki: "My name is Satsuki Yasuda"
わたしのなまえは　やすださつき
私の名前は　安田さつき

Note: to make her sentence perfectly grammatically correct, she should say: 
"Watashi no namae wa Yasuda desu."
わたしのなまえは　やすださつき です
私の名前は　安田さつき　です


です (で:De, す:Su) means "to be".
However, it can be omitted when you are speaking in an "informal" way. Considering Satsuki seems to be quite young and speaking familiarly to the player, she omits the "desu". Using the "desu" can feel a bit snobbish at times.

よろしく (よ:Yo, ろ:Ro, し:Shi, く:Ku): "Nice to meet you"
Yoroshiku is a common expression to say when you introduce yourself to someone. It literally means "well, fine", something like "let's be good to each other". But let's just say it means "Nice to meet you"!

And it ends with a ね! (ね:Ne)
Some sentences in Japanese will end with a ね in order to "soften" it, give it an air of "gentleness".
It can also mean something like "isn't it?/what do you think?".
But let's keep it simple!

My name is Satsuki Yasuda, nice to meet you!❤
Watashi no namae wa Yasuda Satsuki, yoroshiku ne❤
わたしのなまえは　やすださつき　よろしくね❤

I actually got into Japanese while searching for lost anime. Go figure. It's a good thing theme songs in Japan generally have subtitles. For me, the subtitles make it easier to understand what's being said. So that it's a lot like the video game screenshots in that way.

I'd taken French for a few years and for one of my favorite shows I prefer the French dub, so what I'll do to keep up my skills is the first time I watch the episode I have subtitles, but after that I don't have them because I know what's going on and can understand what they're saying more easily.
