Given the peculiarities of the audio that have been widely discussed here, I will take this as the truth, with a grain of salt, of course. The only way to confirm this, is having the actual footage and that's not going to happen.
From all of my interactions with anon1974, they have been nothing but kind and helpful. They do not strike me as a troll or a con artist. There could be a chance that they bought a fake thinking it was real from the collector, but I am not sure of that accuracy. Like I said, at this point the only two people that could easily confirm this, I feel, are Greg or Gordon Galbraith, and I do not feel 100% on bothering these two men. I think this audio is enough for me, and I am satisfied.
Yes, how do we know this and does he believe this is real? I do not want to be morbid, but I feel like he is one of the few that could really recognize his sister's voice.
given how quickly the audio was removed and how anon1974 alluded to being in legal hot water im inclined to believe its real too (thirding this thread be locked lol)
I'd prefer the audio to be confirmed real before the thread is locked but I don't have a say in that, but after that, I'm on board with locking this thread for good. There are a couple people who could confirm it beyond Greg Chubbuck. Gordon could, as its been mentioned, and I think there are a couple others still alive who could do that too.
Okay so here's how it went down. On the day the full audio was leaked, someone found it and told Dycaite about it, and he told all of us about it on the Discord server. One of the members of the Discord told a source who wishes to remain anonymous, and this source used public records to track down Greg Chubbuck and tell him about the audio's release. Reportedly, Greg told the OP of the audio that legal action would be pursued if the audio was not taken down. This, of course, could easily explain why OP wants nothing to do with the search anymore. They done opened up a massive can of worms here and, naturally, they would want to distance themselves from it.
Of note here is that Greg did not pursue legal action over the fake Chubbuck video produced by NationSquid, so that is something to think about.

So so interesting. I think this kinda leans towards the audio is real theory than it is a fake. I honestly don't know where to go from here, if there is anywhere to go. Could we just agree upon that it seems most of the people who would know (mainly Greg) think it is real. I feel like, if the whole legal action thing occurred, anon1974 would probably have admitted it as a fake to save their behind. They would have to be a highly dedicated troll if it is a fake.
So, wait, Greg Chubbuck contacted Anon1974 directly? Or was someone else saying they contacted Greg and conveyed what Greg said to them, to Anon1974?
That I am not sure. I do know there was a comment on the full video by someone saying that they contacted Greg and that he was considering legal action, but the comment was deleted after a few hours.
Ok, so we can say with some certainty that the audio is real. I mean, if there had been complaints about how disrespectful it is, it must be legit. Nobody is going to take legal action because of a fake.
Not to be curt, but is there ever going to be a point where we realize that trying to find an any more "legitimate" source, be it audio or video footage, is only going to end with someone facing legal repercussions against Greg Chubbuck, who's constantly reminded of his sister's suicide due to situations like this?
Honestly, stuff like this made me stop researching and writing lost media articles as a whole, and started focusing my time and effort into media preservation. I can't really share my lost media articles with my friends, or else they could stumble across an article going into detail about how someone died. You don't have that risk with, say, a pre-recorded Cailou VHS tape found at a thrift store.

Agreed. You can search for the video all you want, but the search won't lead to anything good. The audio is out there, and it's as real as we can possibly determine. The only known copy of the video footage is locked up. Let's close this case.
