With "Shifty Shellshock's" death this year, this means that 3/4 (or 3/5) of the "main lineup" of nu metal band Crazy Town (known for their novelty hit Butterfly) is now dead. While the band has technically had a revolving door of "crazy" people contributing to their work, I still found that pretty wild. While Crazy Town has little recognition outside of that one hit, I'd imagine others would be surprised to hear that too. That said, I doubt anyone would specifically be surprised by Shifty's death, since he was as known for being a staple on rehab shows as he was for "Butterfly."
Damn man I love Crazy Town("Drowning" is one of my favorite songs and should've been a big hit) so that sucks to hear.
Yeah, I actually enjoy them as a pseudo-guilty pleasure haha. Like, I don't know if I would call their music "good" per se, but do I LIKE to listen to it? Heck yeah. Apparently, their second and last album did have a minor hit or 2 in Europe, but obviously that wasn't enough to power the band forward, and they broke up. Some people have also commented that they are surprised that Revolving Door didn't go anywhere as a single, considering that it was similar to Butterfly in style.
One member of the band passed away in 2004, then another in 2009, and now Shifty in 2024. I think Shifty and the other "lead" (known as Epic) had attempted a comeback tour at one point a few years ago, but it didn't really go anywhere.

I would call their music pretty good, i'd honestly rather listen to them then more critically acclaimed bands like The Deftones(who never really did much for me TBH).

Yeah TBH there's more than a few "super critically acclaimed" bands that I have just not liked. Usually pretty artsy or folksy music that i just don't vibe with. I don't really like the Lumineers, Foster the People, Bastille, Coldplay, Judah and the Lion, or The Killers. I'd rather listen to Crazy Town LOL.

Agreed, Coldplay have a couple of OK songs but that's as far as i'm willing to go in terms of credit.

For all you soccer fans, the FIFA Confederations Cup is one. For those not familiar - it was a tournament in which every regional competition winner (so random example, let's say Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Nigeria, Japan, and New Zealand) all competed with the World Champions (let's say France) and a host country in an 8 team tournament. It was really fun, had some of the best soccer matches ever played and got people hyped for the World Cup. After 2017, it was replaced by a reformed Club World Cup instead which is kinda disappointing given how saturated club soccer is.
I'm really surprised FIFA hasn't brought a women's equivalent of this tournament to the fold. You'd think they'd be in for an easy profit, but I digress.

Yeah I don't really "hate" any of these bands per se, I can recognize some talent; I just can't think of any of their songs I have willingly gone out of my way to listen to (outside of maybe 1-2 per band). I'm also not super into Billie Eilish or Lana Del Ray, though I don't hate either's voice necessarily. Oh yeah, this is turning into "hot take thread," whoops, haha. Though it does make me wonder which bands have been broken up that people still assume are together?
I'm surprised trollz 2005 never got popular again. especially with the amount of Bratz nostalgia these days
Oh yeah, I was definitely "too old" when there was that revival, but I DO remember it. I think it aired on CBS Saturday morning at some point? I did find the art bizarrely appealing anyway, I was just a sucker for stuff advertised in my "kiddo magazines" (haha) And yeah, plus the fact that the Trolls WERE successfully revived with the Dreamworks movies (and its music, spinoffs, etc.), you would THINK that there would be some craze around the 2005 version. I've also noticed a LOT of mid 00s nostalgia recently, yet I think I've only seen 1-2 reviewers actually talk about it in any depth?
Nickelodeon magazine. Since I still see Highlights and other kids magazines for sale, I just sort of thought this one was still around too? But nope. Last issue was published 2009. Might still have articles online, but actual physical issues are no more.

NASCAR video games. There hasn't been a new NASCAR video game release since 2021. I get that the sport is past its highest days, but it's embarrassing they haven't had consistent video game releases in a while.
EA Sports stopped giving a shit for NASCAR after 2008, and while I loved EA NASCAR games growing up, their exclusive license rights deal in 2004 was so bad for the sport. They killed off Papyrus Studios' NASCAR Racing and Monster Games' NASCAR Dirt to Daytona series of games. After that, the rights to a video game kind of just kept being passed on like a merry go round. NASCAR Ignition 2021 was a disaster of a game.
The irony? iRacing got the rights to make a NASCAR dedicated release for consoles and PC; they are the successor to Papyrus Studios, who were forced to stop making NASCAR games after 2003.

A lot of video game magazines too. There's so many i'm surprised are no longer a thing(Gamepro, Nintendo Power, EGM, Official Xbox and Playstation, etc) Gameinformer is now pretty much the only "game" in town as far as those go(pun very much intended)

Personally, its discontinuation doesn't surprise me at all considering how widespread the internet started to become around the time. Its death was a bit early, but I feel that a 2011 death would've have obvious reasons. If anything, I would be far more surprised if it was still around today as opposed to dying out in 2009.
Dreams are boundless, imaginations are infinite, space is a multi-directional spiral & Akazukin ChaCha is my favorite anime

I actually remember the final issue of Nintendo Power! Bizarrely enough, I think I wasn't even subscribed anymore, but I STILL remember it. I think I'm mixing up the final issue with that issue where they ranked their personal favorite games of all time (which in itself FELT like a finale). And yeah, I read EVERY gaming magazine I could get my hands on-Electronic Gaming Monthly, Playstation, GamePro, GameNow, Nintendo Power, etc. I'd even read Tips and Tricks even if 99.99999% of the information was completely useless to me. Nintendo Power is the only one I ever formally subscribed too though (I'd say EGM had the most impact on me besides NP, but NP had the most direct effect on my life). Didn't know that GameInformer was still around! I could have sworn I've seen Playstation magazines around fairly recently, but pretty much they aren't actually.

Yeah the 2 hit combo of the great recession AND widespread access to internet articles/forums/websites just spelled death for so many magazines. I still remember my feeling around the final issues of Newtype and Nintendo Power. The end of an era!
I only thought Nickelodeon might have hung around, because I still see Ranger Rick, Highlights, and National Geographic for Kids for sale occasionally. But certainly none of these magazines have the reach and influence that they did 20-30 years ago.
