Actually, you may have been right on the money.
Not sure if it was someone from here, but a comment was posted on my video with a link in it:
www.elotrolado.net/hilo_gba-sp-zelda-gold-limited-si-es-oro_1418508
This link contains IN-HAND images of one of the real 24 karat gold GBAs. It's been found.
The site is in Spanish, but according to Google Translate, it sounds like this guy just stumbled upon the auction, and took it to that forum site to inquire about it- the first set of pictures are images from the auction, and the second set are in-hand shots from the guy.
Essentially the guy won it for 600 Euros, or around 700 USD when the actual value of it is 1500 Euros, or around $1700. And once it came in the mail, he brought it to a gold expert who confirmed it had been plated in gold as the contest described.
So this was in 2010, and that article you linked me insulting iguana mentions 2 auctions in 2009, and one in 2011. Combined with that confirmed listing from 2013 from the website I linked in the original post- the timeline looks like 2 were sold in 2009, 1 was sold in 2010, 1 was sold in 2011, and 1 was sold in 2013- that's 5 out of the 7 right there, assuming none of the same ones exchanged hands more than once. That would make a LOT of sense considering if one person sees
All of the auctions to my research can be traced back to eBay UK (which makes sense since these were UK exclusives), and the one from that game site did say it was imported, which is true as they're based in the US.
The only thing that's left to wonder is why there aren't (or weren't previously) in-hand pictures readily available, why no one has ever come forward showing it, and how on earth no gaming site or auction site made mention of these elusive pieces....I suppose it could have been a result of not many people knowing about the contest to begin with, plus they were all sold undervalue.
And of course it's a wonder where these are now, and if any more will ever pop up.
........I'm still amazed at this whole situation and the rarity surrounding these handhelds.
