For Zelda The Minish Cap's release in Europe in 2004, Nintendo released some special Zelda themed GBA SP box sets as seen below.
These contained The Minish Cap game, and a GBA SP with the Triforce on it. The consoles were extremely limited in themselves, but they were essentially part of a contest.
Contained in only 6 of these boxes were special golden tickets that could be used to claim a 24 karat gold plated GBA SP model.
Now, if that's not elusive enough, what makes this topic so interesting is that to this day, no winners have ever come forward, and none of these consoles have ever been seen.
A while ago my interest was piqued with this, so I spent a great deal of time doing research on anything I could find relating to the topic.
I couldn't find any lists of winners, no evidence of eBay auctions- nothing at all. At first I theorized that perhaps Nintendo silently abandoned the contest, or maybe no one actually claimed the tickets and Nintendo just kept the unused stock....until I found this link.
I contacted the website and they can confirm to me that this item was in stock, and sold, in 2013. This means that at least one of these does exist, and is in "circulation".
I also discovered there was a 7th console given out to a winner of a gamesTM.com trivia contest, but upon contacting the site they claimed to have no records of the contest winner.
So I guess the way to "find" this is to get a picture of a legit one in-hand, as well as possibly get a list of winners released to prove Nintendo gave these out. As it stands right now, I'm sort of at a dead end though.
I can't get any more information from that website that had it, because obviously that goes against their privacy policy.
I tweeted to Nintendo and Nintendo UK on Twitter thinking maybe they'd nod in my direction, but they didn't.
I found the name of Nintendo UK's marketing director during the time of this contest, and in an interview, actually talked about the contest, but there's absolutely zero contact info for her, and this contest is more than 10 years old anyway so I doubt she'd even remember it.
Maybe the listing on that site was wrong and it really wasn't the contest prize that was sold? Who knows, but it's an incredibly interesting mystery that you never would have expected Nintendo to create.
