Hi, LMW! I just realized something and...it kinda threw me for a loop. I feel old.
So...YouTube is gonna turn 19 years old soon. February 14th, 2005, the day YouTube was established. That's crazy to think about, this site has been around for so long, safe to say a lot of us grew up with it.
So, to celebrate, I'd like to ask the community a few questions! Anyone can answer! Here are the questions:
1. How'd you discover YouTube? 2. Do you remember the first YouTube video you ever watched? Is it still available? (Adding a link is optional, but you don't have to.) 3. What's a feature on YouTube that you miss terribly? 4. What's the worst feature that you personally believe YouTube put out? 5. If you could go back to a specific time period in YouTube's lifespan, which one would it be?
I'll answer these questions myself down below:
1. I discovered YouTube when I was around 3-4 (I can't specifically remember) years old. My sister and my dad introduced me to the site. 2. Yep! One of the first videos I watched was called "funny cats". It was a compilation of funny cat gifs, photos, and videos from the time. It had music and sound effects over it. It's still available on YouTube, but if you want to find it, you would have to use the "before:year" trick. 3. I really miss annotations, the screenshots we have of them are both hilarious and nostalgic. 4. Removing the dislike button, without a doubt. I know there are features that exist to bring it back, but I still question why they wanted to do that. I feel like now, we need them back more than ever. 5. Probably the mid-late 2000s era of YouTube. When we had five stars, video responses, yellow sub button, Unregistered Hypercam, etc.
I can't wait to read everyone's responses! I hope everyone reading has a good day/night.
Annotations and Video responses, even tho I only have an iPad.
That YouTube removed the "Oldest First" button for a while and everybody was EXTREMELY pissed off as it would be a nightmare to scroll thru channels with a fuck ton of videos uploaded to just see the first one ever made. Thank god it was reverted back months later.
It would be 2013 to 2018 because that is quite nostalgic for me :-)
1. I probably discovered youtube when i was really young, but started to record videos when i was 5 (i know, i probably wasn't supposed to do it at a very young age) 2. Unfortunaly, i don't but it was probably something for kids (like an episode from a tv show or surprise egg videos) 3. Don't have any 4. The ui changes, blocking adblockers and removing dislikes 5. Probably somewhere from 2000s to mid 2010s Also crazy to think that youtube is 19 years old now
1.probably around 2013 by browsing my parents old phones and my dads old iPad. 2.I watched a lot back then but I remember watching Stampylongnose,DanTDM,PopularMMOs and Annoying Orange. 3.customizable channel pages, the old site design and logo, and dislikes 4.removing comments on most animated videos and labeling them as “made for kids”,also this is more due to its uselessness the podcast channel bar, does anybody ACTUALLY use this? 5.it’s beginning to like 2018 which is when things truly began to changed to being meh.

Yeah! It's crazy. Even I can't believe it. Soon we'll be seeing videos from TWENTY years ago.

Tbh, coppa wasn't as bad as people thought if was however it's annoying that they disabled comments and you can't put the videos on Playlists easily
I first heard about it in an issue of Time Magazine and the first thing I looked up was 80s music videos like Iron Eagle and Keel's Tears of Fire and of course AVGN. Annotations were useful and interesting and miss them, I do think the star system was dumb though and didn't miss it when it got removed in favor of likes and dislikes.
1. My sister introduced me to YouTube while I was still in middle school.
2. I don't remember what was the first YouTube video I saw, all I know is that a lot of videos that I saw a now long gone.
3. I miss the YouTube dislike button.
4. The fact that they force you to pay for a subscription to download videos. Granted there's ways around this, but I still believe you shouldn't have to pay to download videos especially given all of the adds that the owners of YouTube bombards people with.
5. I would say anytime before 2018.

1. In 2006 when a lot of people were talking about a new video website and was later featured as person of the year for Time magazine.
2. Maybe the song Kids Next Door "We're Us and They're Them" but played backwards. I remember also watching Weird Al, Ask A Ninja, and some guy who sang backwards
3. The star ratings, tho I know that people would probably abuse them. Same with video replies, they were a neat feature but were probably removed to avoid harassment
4. The fact that when you search for things, you get random nonsense instead of what you actually are looking for.
5. 2009 to 2013. Everything was less corporate and more makeshift. I feel around 2014, the major videos were just fighting about politics. It was a headache. I feel like some of the worse parts of 2014 have faded away but other bad part of it is still around today, I feel like it popularized the whole clickbait outrage thumbnail trend.

Yeah, there are a lot of YouTube Downloader, however I suggest you to have an adblocker, since some of them have a lot of ads

1. How'd you discover YouTube?
For me, it was back when I was in middle school in 2006. I was on some Nickelodeon fandom message boards and people would occasionally link to the personal channels of the actors who would post behind-the-scenes vlog and sketch content. After that, I was hooked.
2. Do you remember the first YouTube video you ever watched? Is it still available? (Adding a link is optional, but you don't have to.)
^ The above was it for me. I don't know if it's still up anymore since I'm having a hard time finding it. If it wasn't that, then I'm sure it would have been stuff from the Zoey 101 podcast if anyone remembers that, like S1 or S2 for sure.
3. What's a feature on YouTube that you miss terribly?
Video responses and annotations. Holy shit, I miss that. It was so practical and it made engaging with people a lot easier, especially the messy communities I was in where people would squabble, debate, and just generally shit talk each other. It was better than waiting to find out someone made a video about you through the grape vine. From just a pure nostalgia and aesthetic perspective and not a practical one, the user channel customization was great.
If anyone wasn't around for this, you could classify your channel with a specific flares; like director, writer, comedian, guru, etc. It had no real function that let you search for content creators that way, but it was a neat, stupid way to feel "cool". There was also the various layouts you could choose from (like 12 pre-set themes) and we eventually had the ability to make our own any way we really wanted like with the MySpace profile design websites. It didn't have this totally sterile look to it like it does now.
4. What's the worst feature that you personally believe YouTube put out?
I would say Google+ with how utterly useless it was to the general community at large, not to mention how Google and YouTube more or less forced everyone to get it.
5. If you could go back to a specific time period in YouTube's lifespan, which one would it be?
Probably the one I grew up with for the most part, so 2006 to maybe the tail end of 2013 or so. It was a tire fire at times, but nowhere as bad as it is now.
4. The fact that they force you to pay for a subscription to download videos. Granted there's ways around this, but I still believe you shouldn't have to pay to download videos especially given all of the adds that the owners of YouTube bombards people with.

I'll never not simp for 4k Video Downloader for this reason.
It's free, you get up to 30 downloads a day (or you can pay for a subscription and I think the download limit isn't capped), and it runs like a dream. You don't have to worry about ads and sketchy content seeping in, which is awesome. You can rip the raw video or just the audio, which rules if you're archiving music like I am.
1. I genuinely have no idea. 2. No, but I do remember watching some MLP G4 episodes back when they were new, as well as a gameplay video of some MLP G3 DS game. 3. I wasn't really around for it, but full channel customization, where you could have different themes and backgrounds. 4. YouTube not sticking to a layout recently. Also the changes with the dislike button and captions, as well as the removal of annotations. 5. 2015-2018, back when I was an elementary/middle school kid on that site. Gangnam Style was still the most popular video then. The good old days...
