I always tell people to try out different kinds of language software, books/curriculum, and technology if they really want to learn another language because not every format works for every person. I've had some books I BARELY touch and others that have truly helped me and been loved to death.
Ironically tho, I did the same thing you did with my copy of World of Narue in Spanish (Spain), and that was after my parents blew tons of $$$ on Spanish language classes and books (sorry parents).
English speakers also seem to forget that no matter how much Japanese language media you consume, Japanese is STILL going to be a "Cat 4" or "super hard" language, putting it up there with Arabic and Korean. Like, unless you are a SUPER gifted language learner, it's going to be a super hard language no matter how you slice it.
