A 2023 law in Arkansas has been temporaily blocked by a federal judge. The same happened earlier this month for a new Ohio law. Both of them, though, weren't all-out bans, allowing for parental consent.
Gary Edinger, a Gainesville-based First Amendment attorney interviewed by the USA TODAY NETWORK-Florida, said he believed Florida's version of the legislation would get blocked by courts.
"Children under 16 still have rights, so this one does severely infringe on them because it does not have exceptions," Edinger said, though added he didn't even think a parental permission exception passes judicial muster.

Yeah that's one of the things I have found worrying. Kids used to have their own spaces on the internet, the Cartoon Networks, Neopets, Poptropicas, AOL kids, Webkinz, etc. and while those spaces were never 100% safe, they helped provide a fun setting designed for that particular "level" of life. But now, you have like 8 year olds in the same spaces as 13 year olds, 17 year olds, 23 year olds, and 35 year olds, with all the content associated with those ages (and their appropriateness) being tossed in a big stew pot of modern social media. Now, keep in mind there are MANY positive trends associated with younger Gen Z/Gen Alpha...but at the cost of never having a real childhood in a sense? Sad. Young kids don't need to hear gloom and doom "world ending" and CONSOOMER all the time and that's primarily what clickbaits all over social media.
I also do agree that it's a shame that "kids media" has declined from the glory days of the 90s and 00s, not sure if true, but I heard that Cartoon Network is basically pumping ALL their money into "nostalgia bait" blocks aimed at Gen Z/Millennials, Adult Swim, and preschool/little kiddo shows, and that's it. Like what the heck are 8-13 year olds supposed to enjoy then???!!!!!
BUT I just think having all these ages in the same spaces will inevitably always lead to major troubles. AND I don't think this bill is the answer either.

Kind of makes me wonder how Native Americans are reacting to this bill & the possibility that THEIR content is a target for what this bill would censor. I'm not native in the slightest, but I am an autistic gay fella so I can sorta(as in, only slightly because the natives have had more time on American land than most others) sympathize with the Natives being horrified of their content being targeted & censored by such horrid bills like these. Like I feel bad for them as this is one other way to screw them over just like what a couple of European settlers did to them all those years ago(to my knowledge, the UK & Spain have never apologized for their actions, unlike Japan who apologized for the less harmful(but still unfortunate) Pearl Harbor).

I wonder if there might be new discourse about these dolls if they become popular with kids, instead of just adult collectors. And I wonder if a lot of kid's toys are going to parallel these weird kid makeup trends. That might be creepy. The stuff that is intended for kids will still be too mature for the demographic.

Is that really gone, though? Is there an epidemic of kids growing up too fast because they went into not child friendly spaces? Kids still have their own spaces - Roblox (the big one), YouTube Kids, websites for children's networks, online game websites like Coolmathgames (which yes, kids still use). Sure, some kids will be on places they're not supposed to be, but that's not a new problem. The parents who don't care that their 8 year olds are on Twitter now are the same ones that didn't care if their kids were watching Adult Swim 20 years ago, and those parents are mostly a minority. Not every parent is throwing their kids online, not monitoring what they do at all, and hoping for the best. There's still plenty of parents who monitor what their children do and steer them away from inappropriate things, and there's some parents who don't let their children online at all (or only do after heavy moderation).
And yes, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network might be in down periods right now, but they're not the only "kids media" companies. Disney has had some successful series in the 8 - 12 range in recent memory (Amphibia, Owl House, Ghost & Molly McGee), Netflix is going strong, and there's a lot of popular YouTube content made for kids. Sure, they might not be your cup of tea, but they are successful with their target audience, which is what matters.

Oh absolutely. MANY cultures are more comfortable with certain concepts and ideas than the rather prudish USA. Hence why media that's rated like 10/11+ in France get a R ratings here, many anime aired uncensored in Mexico but was censored in the USA, Journey to the West (which is brimming with innuendo and gore galore) can be well loved by (and considered appropriate for) children in China, a TV-14 equivalent show can air on a Japanese Saturday morning cartoon block (which is Sunday for them, imagine if Family Guy aired on like Foxbox), or Demon Slayer can get McDonalds kids meal toys in Japan. There's even a whole page on this on TV Tropes: "What do you mean, it's for kids?" (LOL) I don't think the makers behind these bills LIKE how much more international the world has become to the average youth here in the states, how they CAN know that things are done differently in other countries (and those countries have not bizarrely miraculously fallen due to so-called "moral decay") and would rather international worldviews/ideas be as culled as possible. At least IMO.
