WHAT'S going on with this KOSA bill?

Great point-these bills have been happening for years now. AND that's what I'm hoping for, this newest KOSA turd incarnation just gets dropped quickly. 

Yeah, I hate that "you MUST hate children" criticism, it's stupid and needs to die. There are fully valid reasons to not want free speech being forcefully censored by the government on social media, and it extra "amuses" me that the ones who do that are also the ones who fearmonger endlessly about "evil Communist Atheist Chinese/North Korean censorship."

Like how those "book bans" have now been spread to multiple public libraries, despite certain groups claiming that they were ACTUALLY only going after school libraries???!!!! Like it started with "I don't want my kid reading THAT book for class (fair enough), then to "I don't want them being able to check it out of the library (..still okay, I suppose), to "I don't want that book available in the school library AT ALL (WAIT...), to "I don't want it available at my public library at all (like, that defeats the entire purpose of PUBLIC libraries). And I mean, it's not like any kid back in the day could just check out explicit romance and/or horror books and then pass them around, which they did. BUT NOW ALL OF THE SUDDEN IT'S A PROBLEM???!!!! If someone who is offended by a certain book demands it be removed out of the library, but another person doesn't agree, who wins? 

And before I see some yahoo somewhere whine about IDs not being actual censorship and that that data won't really be held in the system anyway, first of all, it WILL likely still be collected and kept in some form, and let's just say I wouldn't be using even THIS site anymore if I was forced to upload my ID to post here. Even the highest security websites have been hacked before, banking and government and college sites have been hacked, if there is any opportunity that a group or individual could collectively humiliate a large group of people and get some "internet legend" points out of it, they will. 

Those book bans were always in bad faith though, in those states the rethugs didn't want ANYONE reading those books because they fear anything different from their own worldview(I.E. straight, white, christian and usually male)so while some may claim they were "just concerned about parents choices" in reality this was their goal all along.

Funny thing about this other bill though is I can see plenty of alt-right trolls not wanting it to pass either as many of those "freeze peach" cowards that hide behind anonymous handles online while spouting heinous and malicious hate speech will have to give out their real names and many of them won't want to reveal their true identities as it could lead to them losing jobs(when one "polite" nazi was profiled by the New York Times under his real name, he was almost immediately fired from his job after his employers knew the truth about him) and other consequences, and as much as i'd enjoy that, it's not worth the other severe negative consequences this bill will bring to those who are actually decent people who just don't want to give out their personal info to every website.

With the widespread access of parents just tossing unfiltered internet "toys" to kids, do you think the book bans are just more performative than anything else? As someone who worked in education, I had a wide variety of books available for years in both the YA and children's category and got only one single real complaint, and even then the one "complaint" consisted of school leadership simply removing the book from my room, they didn't even bother confronting me or anything. Like WHAT HAPPENED. And plenty of kids walked out of the library with explicit genre novels in the 80s and 90s and yet there wasn't widespread panic over that???

And I agree-the lack of anonymity could really come to sucker punch a bunch of hateful people who can no longer hide behind their unidentified posts.

And all this reminds me of people pointing out the majorly low crime rates in places that lack free speech, like China or Singapore, and while, yes, censorship of free speech does lead to a lot more societal peace and protection of individuals (especially children), I would rather take the risks of violence and hate than be unable to say, post about the major housing crisis of 2008 or the putrid gig based economy of 2010 or the lack of education jobs in 2011 (even for college educated individuals) or the overworked nurses of the 2020 pandemic. And again, the freedom to comment anonymously as I do here without fearing the "wrong" employer, coworker, acquittance, or family member will see it. I don't post about politics on my "actual" social media at all for a reason, yet, I want the right to discuss such things too. How can society confront problems if they won't admit that problems even exist, as we are seeing with bloggers in China???

Agreed, not to mention giving p3dos a LOT of free reign, which is an awful idea that this bill is indirectly supporting.

I mean... yeah, but it's pretty much going to backfire & cause what I said to become reality.
