I've been studying the Japanese language on my own for many years now and have done a few translations (some of which have been for lost media stuff.) So, recently I made a twitter account and did my best to translate what the Lost Media is, hopefully if more people know what it is more Japanese lost media can be found.

I think it's worth it to spread awareness of what lost media is to Japanese internet users but I'm not totally sure how to do it or that I can do it on my own. Which is why I wanted to start this discussion.

Some initial questions:

Any advice about how to spread awareness of lost media to Japanese internet users? What are some tactics we can learn from how much lost media has become popular in other languages (for example in the Spanish speaking community) online?

Specific Questions for fellow Japanese learners/ native speakers here:
1. What are some hashtags and helpful translations that you think could help spread awareness of lost media to Japanese internet users?
2. Is 失われたメディア an accurate translation of lost media? I'm wondering if perhaps words like 忘れ物 or 遺失物 or even 忘れ去られた would convey more what we mean when we use the term "lost media", thoughts?
3. I've heard that twitter is a good place to spread awareness about things in Japan, but what other websites do you think should be used?

It probably wouldn't catch on over there. Japan has VERY strict laws for piracy despite being one of the countries that pirates the most. Even if it was some dead series with a defunct company, they can still get in trouble. Filesharing is also a criminal rather than Civil offense over there.

Indeed, Japanese piracy laws are very strict but as you probably know finding lost media isn't always about piracy. Often it's about contacting people of interest, the copyright holders and/or petitioning for said lost media to get an official release. Petitions are often taken more seriously in Japan if they are done by citizens. I think it's important to let people know what lost media is, and it can only lead to way more Japanese lost media being found. Think about all the Japanese games, movies, music, tv commercials etc. that are documented on the wiki and discussed here. It's worth it to at least try.

Filesharing is not always illegal in Japan. When it comes to things like tv commercials it's not illegal to share them.: "However, downloading material that is not for sale, such as a TV program that was broadcast on normal television but never intended for distribution through sale, would not trigger criminal penalties under this law, although there may still be civil liability in some cases. That's incorrect. Out of all the countries in Asia, Japan's piracy rate is the lowest. That's a pretty hilarious thing to say about Japan. They have heavy metal bands, rappers, EGL fashion and so much more that is heavily inspired by media outside of Japan.

Putting aside the issue of piracy, it's undeniable that there are tons of lost media discussions and videos about media from Japan. I don't see the harm in getting the information out there in Japanese about lost media.

Lost media isn't called lost media in Japanese archiving circles; it's called "封印作品", but I have also seen Japanese users refer to lost media as "Phantom Works", ex: 幻のアニメ, 幻のマンガ, etc. I didn't know this early on, so I hope this helps.

And to address luffy4's comment: Yes, lost media communities do exist in Japan. But as stated before, the wording is different, so looking up " ロストメディア" isn't going to turn up anything.

I don't know if the lost media wiki has much of a presence in Japan, to be completely honest. I don't really see it come up in archiving topics.

The archiving community Japan is pretty interesting, though. They're really good at cataloguing data (if you know where to look), but due to obvious reasons (copyright laws), they can't share anything they find unless they get permission. Example: Saishinban Gegege no Kitaro, in which the remaining chapters were only ever republished in a Shigeru Mizuki doujinshi/fan zine.

I should note that old doujinshis (as in reference-type doujinshis/ones that are more like zines) can have extremely valuable information depending on what you're searching for. However, they can be really hard to find and extremely expensive. Off the top of my head, a Maple Town one with storyboards/interviews last sold back in 2021 for 30,000 yen, if memory serves... Depending on the age of what you're looking for though, they can be really helpful. Suruga-Ya has a section on their website for sellers that's basically a catalog of everything that they've ever sold, and their doujinshi section is a pretty solid database.

In my experience, Twitter is one of the best places to find topics discussing lost media in Japanese.

I would love to see more Japanese media restored or found and have been obsessed with some of the older anime that have been lost.

One lost piece of Japanese that I've been very interested in is "Tatakae! Osper" or 戦え！オスパー, produced by Nippon TV (same company associated with the original lost Doraemon anime, Mon Cheri Coco, and other lost anime), they were able to unearth a 16mm film of the 41st episode of the show in an abandoned warehouse, albiet quite damaged, was recovered through crowdsourcing and shown at the Tokyo Cine Center! It's not available online and is only available on Blu-Ray to supporters. I would love to eventually see more if they're able to find more film prints.

It's sad to see how poorly preserved classic anime is, Kineko Video has done amazing with restoring a lot of old film prints of anime. They even recovered parts of episodes of Bōken Shōnen Shadar and did an excellent job at color correcting the faded film. I would love to see some more classics restored to watch. I'd hate to think that a lot of these could be lost to time.

Like MediaMonster stated, I think that Twitter would be a great place to start, from what I've seen quite a bit of discussions about lost media such as this or other rare/obscure media from Japan, only thing is I don't speak Japanese so I sadly can't really participate in those discussions!

It's great to see that something as rare as Osper being found and restored, I would hope or like to think that restoring media is starting to catch on there or getting more awareness. I would love to think of what else could be restored that's been lost over the years!
