Honto ni (or Hontoni, I'm not sure) Atta Gakkou Kaidan is an OVA released on August 21, 1996. It's about thirty minutes, and although a full version can be found on YouTube, it's still basically unheard of. There is no English translation of the OVA. It's split into two stories, one about poisonous spiders and another about the legend of the girl in the bathroom stall attacking the protagonists. The overall story is about three kids name Manabu, Ryota, and Mina. There's also a ghost woman who helps them solve the mysteries, and a cat that appears to give you the prologue and epilogue. There are credits, but they are not translated. You can find information on it on a few websites but you won't find much. Even though there's credits, they aren't available online. Gained popularity after a screenshot of the ghost woman surfaced. (I'm new here, so I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this) The protagonists The cat The ghost woman
The title of this OVA is quite difficult to search for because of it's generic nature, Hontou ni atta gakkou kaidan, it can also be romanized as Honto without the u but I think it adds confusion. ほんとにあった学校 means something like "True school ghost story" or "Real school ghost story" it can also be "Real ghost story school" so searching for it gives a lot of results that are totally unrelated to this anime. This is probably why it's so obscure, it could also be because (like most Japanese lost media) searching for it in romaji returns very few results. Based on the screenshots you've posted I notice that the cat has a split tail. That's a reference to the Japanese folklore of yokai called Nekomata. Here's more info about that if you're interested: yokai.com/nekomata/ You mention that there are uploads of this online, can you post a link?
Oh yes, the picture of the ghost lady blew up sometime back because it was supposedly related to Go For a Punch at first, but people found the origin and debunked it.
Adding to its obscurity is the fact that there's a novel, a manga and an anime called gakkō no kaidan. The anime is super infamous because of its ad-libbed english dub filled with extremely dark and offensive humor
So it seems that what this thread is really about is calling attention to the fact that no one has translated this into English or subbed this yet. Although this OVA is obscure, it not lost and there are tons of other much more obscure anime than this that are lost. For example, there are anime that were only ever aired on TV and then never even got a VHS release, like Bemu Bemu Hunter Kotengu Tenmaru. It also hasn't been translated and the last episode was never even aired.

See, this is one of the pitfalls of using romaji to search for things, which Gakko no Kaidan do you mean? 学校の階段 or 学校の怪談 because they're both romanized as Gakko no Kaidan. Either way, I can't find evidence that those other media are releated to this OVA just because 学校怪談 is in the title. School Ghost Stories or just Ghost Stories as a term can be used for all sorts of media, it doesn't mean they're all part of the same franchise.

Yeah, I was actually trying to prove your point (sorry for poor wording my brain is melting lol). The name is already generic enough, looking for it in romaji is going to make this even more complicated than they already are, since it's not the only OVA or piece of japanese media in general that uses gakkō no kaidan as title.
