Recently, I made a comment on LSSQ’s livestream about searching for a lost/cancelled Don Bluth arcade game titled “Sea Beast” (the full title had slipped my mind at the time, sorry!)

The “Cancelled Games Wiki” has an article on the topic, however, it doesn’t have any information on the project. From what I’ve gathered about the game, it would’ve been released sometime after 1984, when the original sketch concept came out. An official poster for the game was made, and the titular ‘Barnacle Bill’ and the female love interest were featured on a poster advertising Sullivan Bluth Interactive Media. No footage or frames have ever been released.

Fascinating, I've never heard of this project and I consider myself a big fan of Don Bluth's work. I haven't read his recent autobiography yet so I'm not sure if he mentions "The Sea Beast and Barnacle Bill" in his book. I'm intrigued to know more about this.

I highly recommend sending a professional e-mail to Mr. Don Bluth about this project. I bet he will reply and he probably still has the concept art and more from this cancelled project that he may be willing to share. What I mean by a professional e-mail specifically is a well-writtten, thoughtful and respectful e-mail to him asking for him to share what memories he has about the project. It's best for now that only one person e-mail him about this topic, he probably gets a lot of e-mail and we don't want to overwhelm him. Another option is twitter but I'm not sure how active he is about answering questions on there and also we don't want to bombard him with tons of tweets about this.

Are you comfortable e-mailing Don Bluth @dingamagoo? Since you're the OP of this thread I figured I should ask. If you'd perfer I can e-mail him and then report back when/if I get a response.

While searching for more information on Don Bluth's unmade projects this well written article caught my eye: cartoonresearch.com/index.php/bluths-un-made-animated-features/ one of the comments here by Landon Kemp mentions another unfinished Bluth project called Piper.

Also, DB actually has several more lost projects I'd be down to make a thread on, such as "Piper". I just chose Sea Beast to start because it had the most promotional material (which isn't saying much).

Yeah, Bluth has had several projects that got a little of the way into production, but just kinda died out. He's had like 9(?) cancelled films and about 5 cancelled interactive arcade games. Might add those to the thread soon, who knows.

So, this is kind of a sad to announce, but the search The Sea Beast and Barnacle Bill has (possibly) come to an end. In a 2002 interview with Don Bluth for Retro Gaming Radio, Bluth stated the game never got made, not even properly started. The images I provided were the ONLY things to come from the project physically. The many video game projects fell apart due to the arcade and video game collapse from 1983. This is why Bluth went back to making movies.

Sad to see this come to an end, as it was my first time truly starting a lost media search, but there simply is no more material. As a bonus, here's those posters from the other unmade Don Bluth games.
