Hey all!
I've been trying to find this old German-language computer game for years now and also asked on other websites, but no one remembers it. Played it in the mid-late 90s, likely Windows but could be DOS.
The game was a puzzle game, possibly about geometry, where you had to help a character (simple, cartoony; a pyramid with a face and limbs?) dig things up on a green, non-scrolling map. Digging wasn't as simple as clicking, but rather involved using different drawing & measuring tools in some manner that definitely included a drawing compass. I think the point was to mark or calculate the spot where you had to dig, but I couldn't figure out how to do that as a kid.
What's most unique is that the game had an option to write letters to an in-game character (I believe he was some sort of professor who looked similar to your character) to get a response back, possibly as a help feature. You had to type them up yourself, and I remember a mail van driving across the screen.
I remember sending these letters, which confirm some things I remember about the game:
"Wie buddel ich?" - "How do I dig" in a colloquial way; I got a response saying he didn't understand my letter, so the game definitely tried to parse the text.
"Wie grabe ich die ____ aus, die unter der Erde liegen?" - "How do I dig up the ____ that are under the ground?"; this got me a longer letter response, but I don't remember what it said other than it not being very helpful. ___ was something you had to dig up for the old guy you sent the letters to, possibly parts of something, but I don't remember that word.
I don't know where the game came from or if there was more to it. It might have been a demo or freeware game, possibly even from the internet, but looking through old download sites like DrLoad and Softgames in the Wayback Machine didn't turn up anything.
I've posted this twice to tipofmyjoystick and once to the DOSGames forum so far, but no dice. I've looked through MobyGames, a site called Adventure Legends, several ad game (Werbespiele) archives and many, many google searches, but it's been unfindable and no one remembers it.
It's a shot in the dark by this point, but would be grateful for any help!
