I know there might be some people who don’t know what The Wombles is generally but basically they’re fictional small furry creatures that picks up litter for the human beings created by Elisabeth Beresford that became popular with its books, tv series, and even a pop band.
It was mainly a United Kingdom thing but however, there was an attempt to bring The Wombles to the USA for a potential live action series. In 1985, Satori Entertainment made a pilot episode that consists of full body costumed Wombles and original littering villains, Dr Edmund Gomaniac (Frank Gorshin) and his unnamed sidekick (Abe Vigoda). The score is done by composer Irwin Fisch while songwriter, Paul Williams wrote original songs and music.
The pilot summary taken from a promo sheet reads:
It didn’t became successful and therefore, wasn’t broadcasted and didn’t became a series. Sadly, there isn’t much info on this pilot and the most I could find is a page on a Wombles fan site which includes the promo sheet I have shown and mentioned:
www.tidybag.uk/television/the-wombles-1985-us-tv-pilot/.
It does looks like it is in the Library of Congress but however, how to get it I have no idea but it is nice to know that it is somewhere at least: lccn.loc.gov/94510734

It’s musical! It’s magical! It’s wombleful! Wombles are funny, furry, and friendly live-action characters who spend most of their time cleaning up after messy humans. ‘The Wombles’ is an exciting new half-hour series featuring original music videos and fast-paced fun for the whole family.
The introductory episode stars Frank Gorshin as the detestable villain Dr Edmund Gomaniac (better known as ‘E. Gomaniac’) and Abe Vigoda as his goofy sidekick stooge. Dr Gomanic is littering the world with indestructable candy bar wrappers, but the sanitation snafu is only part of evil E. Gomaniac’s master plan. Will the Wombles succeed in stopping him? . . . stay tuned.
With special guest stars Paul Williams, La Toya Jackson, and Henny Youngman.
Join the Wombles and clean up your act!
