I'm not sure if anyone else heard the news about this, but other outlets are covering it. Nintendo also has an an FAQ discussing its decision and what's going on as well. When I saw this last night, it had me wondering what this means for possible lost media and preservation.
Here's an article from Polygon covering the ongoing news and the article via Nintendo Support. It's worth mentioning that, according to Polygon, quote, "The Wii U eShop offers more than 300 games via Virtual Console in North America, while the Nintendo 3DS eShop offers 191". Now, what's available for other regions is unknown to me. If there's anyone here who can fill in those blanks, it would be much appreciated.
I made sure to buy Devil's Third from the Wii U eshop as physical copies are going for outrageous prices and they'll soon be the only way to play that game.

You gotta love price gouging, don't ya?
I hope others are able to pick up what they can, even the really cheap badly made stuff just so we can keep a log of it. Speaking of which, if anyone out there wants to start a doc or spreadsheet of what's there so we know what's safe, that would be incredible.

Blame WATA for that, prices for physical copies of rare games shot through the roof once they started their grading bullshit. I'd actually bought a physical copy of Devil's Third before I even got a Wii U because I knew it was going to get out on control, but i'd traded in my physical copy to Gamestop years ago so I had to get it on the Eshop.
I'd like to own a physical copy of Game & Wario, but it goes for around $200. Apparently it didn't sell well and went out of print after about a year.
And call me crazy, but I bought a PAL region New Nintendo 3DS just so I could download Mario's Super Picross, because it's the only SNES 3DS VC game that hasn't been dumped yet, so I was planning on homebrewing the 3DS and making a CIA of it for preservation purposes.
Nintendo's decision to shut down the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops in 2023 marks the end of digital distribution for these older platforms, impacting access to games and content. This is similar to how Lulubox Super modifies game experiences by altering access and features within games, though Lulubox focuses on modifications rather than discontinuations. Both highlight shifts in how digital content is accessed and managed.

Actually every single game digitally and every app on both 3DS and Wii U plus all add ons was preaerved and given to the video game museum. The one who keeps preservation of all video games. I saw a YouTube video of the team who did it. It costed them a lot of money and they had to use multiple 3DS's and Wii U's

It was Jirard the Completionist who bought them all right?

Yes and sent/donated them to the Video Game History Foundation: gamehistory.org/

Very cool, that's why no matter what happens with that so-called "charity scandal" i'll always respect Jirard for doing his part to preserve gaming history.
