EDIT: It has been found!
After asking around on a Daria fanforum, someone was kind of enough to DM me the opening in full. It's an MP3 so there's no video, and it's not the highest quality, but that's to be expected when it was never released in any physical form or streaming service. It can be listened to here: Daria musical theme.mp3 (396.12 KB).
(First time posting, sorry if I'm doing this wrong)
Daria is a '90s animated sitcom by MTV featuring the character Daria Morgendorffer from Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head.
While rewatching the show again for the third or so time, I was also occasionally checking articles on its wiki, mainly to check the trivia section to see if there were any interesting tidbits. Overall it's been pretty fun watching it this way, that is until I got to Season 3 Episode 1, "Daria!", which happens to be one of my favourite episodes so I was particularly interested to see what sort of trivia there would be. Out of everything, this line caught my interest the most:
A "Broadway" version of the theme song opened the episode during its TV broadcasts. The DVD boxset only used the opening titles for the first episode of every DVD, and so "Daria!" lacks this altered opening in the collection.
See, the episode in question (Daria!) is actually a musical episode featuring all of the characters singing as they go on about their day, so it would make sense to have a unique opening. However, despite this, I have never actually seen or heard of any such "Broadway" version of the opening. The trivia mentioned it wasn't present on the DVD boxset, but from what I can tell, it doesn't seem to be anywhere online either. This mainly seems to be due to all the sites that have hosted the show (Hulu, YouTube, etc.) opted to use the same version from the boxset, meaning the intro is missing on any easily accessible version of the show.
For those unaware, there are actually two different versions of Daria. The original version that aired on TV featured numerous popular songs from the '90s playing in the background, while the version released on the DVD boxset had all of the copyrighted music replaced with new, royalty free music. Every streaming site uses the second version. While there have been fan efforts to restore and archive the version that was aired on TV, it seems that this particular episode is always overlooked due to none of the music in the actual episode being altered, as evidenced by the fact that every torrent I've checked just uses a rip from the DVD.
Despite all of this, the DVD version (and subsequent streaming versions) DOES contain a small snippet of what the opening sounded like, albeit only lasting the duration of the title card. I have compiled what these snippets sound like in a short video you can find here. The fact that that it opens fading into the music makes me pretty optimistic that there actually is a full version out there somewhere, I've just run out of places to look.
So far, I have checked the following places with no luck:
Places I have NOT checked (mainly due to budgetary reasons):
I really doubt any of the above sites would actually have the full opening since they all seem to use the same version on the DVD, but you never know. To me, though, it seems that the most likely place to find the full opening (assuming a full version really does exist) would be on VHS recordings from when the episode originally aired on TV.
It should also be noted that despite being Season 3 Episode 1, its production code is actually Season 3 Episode 7, so it may be listed as such on some places. Additionally, some sites also title it as "Daria!" The Musical.
