The fact that the information was never sourced intrigues me. It reminds me a lot of the Astrology with Squidward search and how the earliest information about the series online was an unsourced Wikipedia edit which mentioned signs that never existed.
I'm pretty sure we contacted some other early editors too and no one knew anything about how accurate the claims were. I feel like with SpongeBob lost media that's a pretty frequent occurrence, even if it was sourced the person who added it might not remember anything about it.
Someone I know who watched SB when it first premiered says it didn’t have the logo, but the wiki article says it was on early split-screen credits. Nickelodeon first used those credits in early 2000 (SB premiered in mid 1999) so recordings that have the logo would have to be from 2000 or maybe 2001. I went through a bunch of Nick recordings from the time a while back and the only ones with the logo I could find had the theme song or the waves crashing/seagulls.
Now, did the second of the two aforementioned variants premiere along with season 2? I feel like when I went through the online recordings it was initially just the end theme variant. Season 2 premiered in I believe September of 2000, so assuming the waves crashing/seagulls logo premiered then, it’s likely it “replaced” the foghorn variant on the season 1 airings. So that would narrow down the timeframe to about February-September 2000.
It also might be worth trying to find out who originally added the tidbit about the foghorn variant on CLG wiki. I know it’s been there for a long time, since I remember back in like about 2015 or 2016 being surprised that I couldn’t find the foghorn variant I’d read about and which seemed familiar. So I’m glad to see that someone else noticed this discrepancy and actually brought it up since I never did (again, it was probably before I even joined these forums in 2016 that I read about it).
It’s been on there for at least 14 years now, I’m not sure who originally added it but it was never sourced. I do know that Nickelodeon started adding audio to otherwise silent logos starting around 2001 when aired with split screen credits (Snee-Ooosh, Peter Hannan Productions, etc). I’ve always been doubtful of the foghorn claim though since it has been the seagulls/waves for the longest time.
Wow, since 2009? I was thinking 2011.
Anyways, I think the waves/seagulls premiered with s3, since the earliest SSC for SpongeBob with it is from April 2002. If the SSC with original audio premiered in 2001 though the foghorn variant could still have been used for a brief time before the waves/seagulls one premiered.
I went back and double checked the old CLG listing and the foghorn variant tidbit actually seems to have been added on May 14th 2012 by a user named “WWEISWAR”. Unfortunately they were last active in 2014 and it doesn’t seem like they moved on to the new AVID version of the website so I’m not sure if they’re online anywhere else to contact them.

It is very possible that a VHS recording could out there featuring this alternative version, especially with how big SpongeBob is.it might even be under are noses right now through some obscure upload online similar to other lost logos

Recordings of first airings of SpongeBob episodes exist en masse online, don't they? All we need to do is check.
"oooh, you're a- a freaked out child in the woods..."

We’d probably have to check the premieres of s2, since most of s1 premiered before splitscreen credits became the norm for Nick.

Nice job finding that user nostalgiaguy though I'm not surprised they're not around anymore. allthat182 could ask the logo server about the user or the logo itself. It seems like asking communities is a good option, though I'm always a fan of looking through uploads too.
I'm in a Nickelodeon archive server so I could ask for their thoughts on the topic.
