Hello Lost Media Forums!
My first post here, and I think I might have a new bit of lost media:
Before I begin, I just want to put in a warning: This is regarding a very quick jumpscare/screamer that is reported to last about 6 seconds long, so if you hate jumpscares, I'll avoid putting a direct link to them.
Anyway, I was talking to a friend about the old "The Nun" jumpscare ads that gained a hell of a lot of controversy back in August 2018 to promote the film, which to the point YouTube themselves had to step in and ban the adverts because the ads themselves were about 5 seconds long, and had a jumpscare about 4 seconds into the "ad".
IIRC the ads were pulled extremely quickly because of how many people complained about it showing up... everywhere, Twitter threads claiming it was appearing on children's videos, makeup tutorials, gaming, fitness and more.
The most popular ad (NOT lost media, easily findable) had a black screen showing off an iOS like volume bar going down to mute, then the Nun from the film appeared screaming.
Link to the ONLY archived ad: www.youtube.com /shorts/eH6hbpJ7IZg (6 seconds long)
If you don't want to view the ad, here's the images:
Anyway I came across the Screamer Wiki page for it (https://screamer.wiki/The_Nun_-_YouTube_Ads)(don't worry, it's safe, it just gives info on the ad) and the wiki article mentions there were a LOT more that were going around online, and only the "iOS volume" one was found/archived. (Linked above)
The Wiki page states there's at least 4 other ads that were just as short as the original with a jumpscare at the end, these being:
I looked at the page history for the wiki page and there's a deleted segment from January 2019 which also claims:
COMMENT: This was originally shared by Twitter user apple @bbydvas and other users have chimed in to say the volume control isn’t the only indicator that the ‘ad’ is about to start. Other users claim you will see a spinning beach ball, much like the one you get on a Mac when something is processing, or you will see the Nun her/himself flit by in the corner.

COMMENT: Wtf be careful my dudes the new Instagram story advert for the Nun has a really bad jumpscare so if you get affected by jumpscares please swipe quickly to avoid it it appears after the Apple pinwheel loading icon comes up
NOTES:
The Tumblr post implies it might be a bit different than the iOS volume one, as the tumblr post says "the screen starts to glitch", and news article says the Nun also appeared in the corner, not the centre.
If I had to guess, it appears this ad MIGHT begin with the ball spinning for a few seconds, before the ball starts to glitch out, then the Nun pops up in the corner.
A user claims they saw it on Instagram.
The "Spinning Beach Ball" on MacOS tends to look like this:
"GOOGLE / YOUTUBE BUFFERING LOGO"
The only 2 mentions of this I found were on reddit:

COMMENT: EDIT: Done some more looking around on Reddit, there's still a new one lurking around with the Google Chrome buffering symbol before the jumpscare.

COMMENT: It was an ad of a dark room with the google chrome sign buffering in the middle and six seconds long. The video time stamp was moving also. “Weird” I note to myself. I have pretty fast internet so why would an Ad of all things buffer. Then it all turns to black and THE NUN POPS UP! Nearly gave me a heart attack! There was no way to avoid it in less than 6 seconds time!

COMMENT: After ur tweet got big, I stopped getting the specific ad with the volume sign, now it's just a 3 second long still image of a church hallway (with "THE NUN" on the bottom of the screen) that looks like its buffering then *JUMPSCARE* Finally caved in & got yt red F[][]k u youtube
NOTES:
The second comment gives us a LOT more info to work with and describes it quite in depth.
Ad begins like a normal ad, with a dark room, fooling the user into believing it's a normal film ad, then it fake "buffers" for a few seconds before The Nun pops up.
It's possible the "hallway" ad and the buffering ad MIGHT be the same one going off the description of the above tweet.
YouTube have also since changed the buffering icon, in 2018 it looked like this:
That's all I found for now.

The Wiki page states there's at least 4 other ads that were just as short as the original with a jumpscare at the end, these being:
- A fake buffering logo to trick the user into thinking the ad is struggling to load, then The Nun (Valak) appears with a loud scream.
- Nothing about 5 seconds, then The Nun pops up along with a loud scream.
- A spinning ball, much like the "Beach ball of death" found on Apple Macs
- Fades into a hall, then slowly moves down the room, a bell tolls, then The Nun appears.
I looked at the page history for the wiki page and there's a deleted segment from January 2019 which also claims:
- a "flashing warning sign" (⚠️) for The Nun was seen on Instagram and Snapchat only.
However, since this part was removed from the page, it's debatable if this was real.
It's also unknown if they all used the same jumpscare image, or if they were like the K-fee commercials which had different "faces" for different ads.
MENTIONS OF THE OTHER ADS:
"APPLE / MAC OS BEACH BALL OF DEATH"
