In 2016/2017 DHX Media acquired the rights to Strawberry Shortcake and announced they were going to make a 3D show.

Most of the press releases used this image. Strawberry being a CG model with magical powers and her friends being mock ups. Also pointing out that the BG features large plants, a staple of the shows up to this point.

There was also this image I ended up saving but I am not sure where I originally found it. It shows a rendering of Strawberry with my guess is a Berrykin. Also pointing out again the large plants in the BG. I am not sure if this was just a mock up or a screen cap from a video. I think I might have found it in an article.

Last September (2021), out of no where a new Strawberry Shortcake show was released but looking very different than these mock ups.

Noting that it is 2D and takes place in more of a modern city setting. And there doesn't seem to be any magic or Berrykins. However there are similarities to some of the designs of the characters.

And I am wondering if more of what appeared in the original press release exists. Were there production issues that caused the switch from 3D to 2D? Why was the setting changed from fantasy to modern day? Is there a video or clip for the 3D render with the Berrykin?

Maybe there is a lost pilot dedicated to that 2017 series that got reworked into a 2021 series.

I don't know what happened behind the scenes either. If there was a 3DCG animated pilot, maybe DHX Media struggled to sell it for whatever reason. Maybe test screenings didn't got too well. Maybe market research indicated that a 2D cartoon in a modern setting appealed to DHX's target audience than 3D fantasy cartoons. What do you think?

I believe that screencap with what's believed to be a berrykin is from a highlight reel, which as ilovelostmedia pointed out was taken down. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing it. No idea if anyone actually saved it (I haven't seen it turn up anywhere) or if there was more animation produced than that. Unpopular opinion, but I kinda would have liked to see that instead of what we got. Not that I think what we did get is bad, but I'm just not that into it.

I actually like the style of this pilot more than the final 2D show. IDK I think I just prefer the fantasy over modern day kids running food trucks.

I fully agree: what we eventually got just sounds like a more boring version of Cookie Monster's Fooding Truck, which in itself is just average as heck. Slower paced & more agonizing. Maybe the show has some funny moments, but really the DiC cartoon was at least more interesting from what I could remember of it.

I watched through the series. A lot of the jokes and pacing remind me of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Littlest Pet Shop (2012) but condensed to a much shorter format. I think it was made by the same production team, DHX Media.

You can sort of hear it in the music, it just has a similar vibe.

I don't remember much about what happens. There was an episode with a transwoman which was cool.

I believe there were also suppose to be dolls and other toys but that never happened.

I was thinking they might have thought it was too similar to Berry Bitty Adventures. Strawberry doesn't have magic in that, but they are tiny (hence the name), and what I'm assuming is a Berrykin here looks similar to the Berrykins there. Of course, it's difficult to tell just how similar it would have been from this one clip.

I have several theories to why is was scrapped or changed...

- Early press release got a lot of negative responses, especially with Orange Blossom.

- They were trying to pitch the concepts and networks weren't interested. Hub was defuncted and maybe they were struggling to find someone who would take the original idea.

- MLP:FiM ending and DHX Media maybe being open to new projects. If they could turn MLP into a modern hit, maybe they could do the same for Strawberry Shortcake

- YouTube. Strawberry Shortcake posted clips of Berry Bitty to YT and got millions of views. I could see them seeing that having a new show formatted to web content would probably get more viewers. Even before Berry in the Big City, they were posting short 2D episodes for Berry Bitty

Strawberry Shortcake recently announce there will be a new 3D special coming to Netflix that uses a different style than these concept art.
