I am searching for a show/segment I viewed on Canadian TV as a child, era would be late 90s/very early 2000s. It featured what I believe to be Cavemen in a puppetry/claymation style and the "dialog" was entirely gibberish. The characters somewhat resembled troll dolls, with black beady eyes and real hair. I Believe the show aired on one of the children's channels in Canada, the strongest contender being Treehouse but it's possible it could have been something like CBC Kids. Teletoon and YTV are less likely but I won't rule them out. I can only distinctly remember viewing this show once, so I'm not certain if it was its own show or a short segment of a bigger program. Since this would have been close to 20 years ago, I don't have much in the way of details but I'll write down everything I do remember!
Things I'm extremely confident about:
- Show was in a tangible style, either puppets or claymation. It definitely wasn't 2D animation
- Characters were cavemen, or at the very least lived in a cave.
- They bore resemblance to troll dolls, black beady eyes & real hair.
- There was no spoken language in the show, strictly gibberish & nonsensical sounds
Things I’m less confident about:
- The Design of the characters. I can kind of recall large noses possibly with no mouth, though in my mind I've always approximated the character designs to be a cross between the giants from Majora's Mask on N64 and the famous Troll Dolls so I'm unsure if that's just the comparison muddying up the details in my mind. The skin color of the characters is also another detail I have some trouble recalling in confidence, It may have been red but was more likely an orange-ish color. Definitely a warmer tone.
- It may have been a family of cavemen. I seem to remember the content of the episode I watched being particularly distressing to me as a child, and I think it may have been because the Mother caveman was yelling at one of the child cavemen.
- As I mentioned before, I really don't know if this was its own show or a shorter segment of a larger show in the vein of something like Kablam (Though it's unlikely to be Kablam, it never aired where I live to my knowledge) For what it's worth, though, I can recall there being an intro sequence with a title.
In addition to original programming, most of the big Canadian cartoon channels (YTV, Teletoon, Treehouse etc.) would License & broadcast shows from a wide variety of different sources, so it stands to reason that the show very well could have been licensed from a foreign television company, especially since the show would require little to no localization & dubbing due to the lack of dialog.
I’ll Go ahead and rule out a few shows I've seen frequently suggested. It’s definitely not any of the following:
- The Gogs
- Hairy Jeremy
- Fred the caveman
- Bob and Prometheus
- Robot Chicken
Finally, I have taken the liberty to create this illustration of what I believe the show may have looked like. Keep in mind it's very hard to capture a claymation look in ms paint, so this should only serve as a rough idea of what I'm looking for. The club and loincloth are something I felt compelled to add, although I can’t actually remember if they were present in the character design. Vibrant green is the most prominent color in my memories of this show, I believe it mostly took place in one central grassy area. I also recall the backdrop being a heavily wooded jungle/forest.
