Hello! I joined the LMW forums in order to ask about a comic or manga I remember but have never been able to identify.
The one part I remember vividly is that there are several people cryogenically frozen on a spaceship. One of them is either deliberately or accidentally woken up early (possibly by a ship AI?), and goes out onto the surface of the ship. There, interstellar dust has accumulated on the hull, so thick that the character leaves footprints like they're walking through deep snow. I believe the ship eventually reaches its destination, but beyond that I don't remember anything.
I would've read this in the mid-1990s, but it may have been published much earlier. Theoretically it could have been published as late as 2000, but I don't think any later than that. I don't know whether it was part of a longer series or a one-off. I don't know whether it was black-and-white or in color, or even whether it was in English (but I do remember understanding the meaning of the interstellar dust, so I suspect it was in English). It might have been manga, or an American comic, or from anywhere—my father had it, and he worked at an arts college, so even though he wasn't much of a comics fan it might have come from anywhere. It might not even have been a commercial publication, just a student work, though I do remember the art having a professional level of polish (but hey, I was a kid, I didn't have very high standards).
I looked through the work of Yukinobu Hoshino, who seemed like a likely candidate, but I didn't find anything resembling this (though, who knows, it might just be super hard to find?). It might also be someone like Moebius—I've been looking through his works and haven't found it yet, but I haven't read everything of his. It could be a small-press American comic like A Distant Soil?
Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated!
