I had first heard the phrase "Shorty The Pimp" sampled on the opening track from the 1992 album of the same name by Too $hort a few years ago. With the street ambiance of a pimp lifestyle in Oakland, California, Too $hort pretty much found the most ideal piece of music gold in order to convey that. The hard-edged soul track by the Los Angeles trio Don Julian & The Larks was cut as part of a soundtrack for a movie of the same name: Shorty The Pimp. It has been said that it was slated to be released in 1974, but never saw the light of day.
Don Julian had previously done another blaxploitation soundtrack in 1973 for the movie "Savage!", and had recorded (but not released) a complete soundtrack for Shorty The Pimp as well. For the longest time, only some of these tracks could be heard on the rare "Super Slick" album by Don Julian & The Larks. Thankfully back in 1998, Ace Records out of the United Kingdom was able to stumble across the album and release it for the fist time. Included in this reissue's booklet is a letter they found from the film's director, Morton Schulman, addressed to a "Alan Reed" of Los Angeles.
The booklet also states the editing of the film was never completed, due to many backers cutting off their funding. The producer of the film had a falling out with several major distributors all at once, there was a scandal involving the former model turned lead actor in the film (Julius Richmond), and an import-export business in Tijuana, Mexico basically killed the project before ever making it to the theaters. It's also stated that the film is (or was, by 1998 standards) in the possession of Quentin Tarantino. The booklet also goes as far to say that it is believed that Tarantino paid homage to it in "Pulp Fiction", of all things. I don't recall seeing a 5 foot 3 pimp in the movie (or as the back cover of the soundtrack states, 4 foot 9), do you?
Regardless, I started to think about this story again because of a few things that happened recently this year. Vinegar Syndrome (home media company specializing in rare / obscure horror and action films) was able to find the reels to a movie that was shot in 1984, but was never finished. With no sound materials, scripts, or really anything to go off of, they managed to edit the film (New York Ninja) into a complete product and release it in October. Pairing that with the reissue record label Real Gone Music announcing that they're reissuing Don Julian & The Lark's "Super Slick" album for the first time in 47 years, it ignited a hope in me for this film.
It's a fantastic story, and I thought I would mention it in the hopes to spread the word about it. It would be quite difficult to find, but more incredible feats have been accomplished with even older obscure material as of late. Even if the film itself turns out to be another alright blaxploitation film, the circumstances around it alone make it worth being found in my opinion.
