I really like Catherine Spaak: she was a drop-dead gorgeous woman, a great actress, an accomplished musician and (at least in the 60s) tended to pick really interesting scripts to lend her talents to. I can honestly say that the most thought provoking female characters I've ever seen in the cinema are now disproportionately composed of roles which Catherine brought to life. Unfortunately, her filmography is somewhat hard to collect as an American. Some titles require purchase of expensive European Blurays with complementary region-free players. Others, like today's selection, have never been made available on home media since the VHS era of the '80s.
This is La Notte e Fatta Per...Rubare (1968 or '67 depending on the source) which translates as "The Night Was Made For...Stealing" and was directed by Giorgio Capitani. It's admittedly a lesser entry in Spaak's career, but I feel that in 2021, every movie ought to be hosted online in some capacity. Until today, the only way to see this film was to pay for a 40 year old foreign videotape or a website's rip of the same thing. I don't think we can trust Rubare to survive long term in such conditions; it needs to be preserved on the internet and accessible to the public. Also, it should be noted that the subtitles are terrible, but they're what I was given with my copy. It's possible I'd think more highly of the movie if I wasn't seeing a 40 year old version sourced from inferior hardware with a washed out picture and relying on subtitles that I can't understand.
I happen to be a fan of Philippe Leroy (of Femina Ridens fame primarily) as well as the composer, Piero Umiliani, both of whom also contribute to this particular film. Since it's hard to know what's going on, it helps immensely that the soundtrack is so great. Spaak deserves some credit for the soundtrack as well, since she sang at least two songs on it. Anyway, Philippe and Catherine are stunning as always, so I enjoy watching them do wacky heist things even if I can't follow the intricacies of the plot. For example, Spaak's character (named Valentina): treks through a runway, acts like a scheming femme fatale, wears a black bathing suit/black evening gown/blonde wig at various points and nonchalantly punches multiple guys in the face, which is cool.
