Last time I made a post, I talked about the Partially Found copies of the EU Portuguese masters of the House of Mouse episodes (that is, the EU Portuguese dub and the edited scenes to translate the written text seen on the show itself).
This time, I want to talk about the existence of some unauthorized dubs of one of the most well known animated shorts series, Looney Tunes.
The Looney Tunes shorts had an official release since the 90s, with the EU Portuguese dub being released in 1996 (mostly because of the original Space Jam movie) with the dub done by the studio Matinha - Estúdios de Som, S.A. and they released on VHS and DVD, even with some redubs being released (either by the same dubbing studio, Matinha - Estúdios de Som, S.A., or by Somnorte).
However, just like the US had bootleg VHS tapes with public-domain shorts, Portugal also had some tapes with the same type of shorts. However, the dubs from those tapes are not only unauthorized by the Warner Bros. (since most of them are in public-domain) but some even predated the official dubs.
Now, I know most people don't care about international dubs, but I wanted to share this since I find it quite interesting as these dubs predate the official dubs most Portuguese people know today.
Also, these tapes might be related to the infamous The Video Bancorp VHS tapes. Why? Well, some of the tapes had the same "Math Refresher" screens as those from The Video Bancorp. The Portuguese distributor that had those infamous screens is called Visa Video, and they seem to use the tapes from The Video Bancorp as a template for the EU Portuguese dubs, especially since some tapes share the exact same shorts in the same order.
One of the interesting things is that even some of the official EU Portuguese dubs of the shorts are "lost" since they were only released in old VHS tapes that weren't re-released on DVD and/or were released in limited quantity DVDs that are rare to find.
The following videos are just a comparison between the official EU Portuguese dub and one of the the unauthorized dubs.
