Many of us recall the early 2000's kids show Dave The Barbarian. I have a distinct recollection, however, of an earlier, slightly different version.
The concept was the same: a barbarian, his siblings, and their escapades in the mythical land they lived in. It was animated, but not in the same way as the show we came to know. Instead, Dave The Barbarian was 2D, with silver pins at the joints of his limbs. The pins did not have any pointy parts, they simply looked like silver circles at each joint.
To expand on that, imagine a 2D paper/cardboard halloween decoration of a skeleton that you would hang on your door. At the ankles, knees, hips, elbows, wrists and shoulders of the skeleton, there are pins holding the pieces of paper together that make the skeleton "dance" when it moves. It gives the appearance of movable joints to a 2D object. The animation for the show was like this. 2D, paper-like character cut-outs, where the motion came only from the joints of the limbs being pinned to each other. To be clear, this was NOT animated like South Park where the characters are meant to look like paper. It was cleaner animation but the gimmick was that the characters were all pinned together and 2D.
I have not been able to find any record of this version. My memory is corroborated by a conversation I had with a friend in school when the version of the show we all know now was airing (around 2004). The friend asked if I watched Dave The Barbarian and I was shocked he liked it because i dismissed it as being weird, and kind of gimmicky. I didnt like that the characters had pins in their arms. My friend did not know what i was talking about but i knew at the time that I had seen the show he was describing, the one outstanding difference being the animation/wavy joints of the characters. So to reiterate, I remember both viewing this alternate version and then speaking to someone about it soon after.
My rational explanation is that the Guide on my cable box displayed Dave The Barbarian in that time slot but the network actually played something else. Dave aired on Family Channel in Canada where I saw this. I have had no luck finding any shows that fit the animation style that have aired on family channel prior to Dave going off the air.
My 2nd explanation is that there is an episode of Dave where for whatever reason the plot allows for their animation to change. I admittedly have NOT combed through every episode of the show but have read the plot synopses and found nothing referencing it. Any help or tips on finding out if I'm onto something or just misremembering would be awesome
