From 1999 to 2012, Food Network aired a series hosted by chef Alton Brown; titled Good Eats. During its run, the series gained a pretty large fanbase that’s still going today.
However throughout the series’ initial run, Food Network has cut certain scenes from various episodes, sometimes the scenes are never aired publicly; being cut before the episode’s original airing and then get replaced with a new reshot scene.
Such is the case with the episode discussing the history of/cooking with molasses. Originally, (before the episode officially aired) Food Network executives asked Alton to remove a certain scene involving discussing Shoofly Pie….in an Amish setting.
The original cut scene involved an Amish couple (played by two of the show’s crew members) driving a buggy. For the end of the scene, Alton had an idea to digitally copy the husband’s beard onto the wife’s face.
Food Network saw the footage of the original scene, and told him that the scene could not be aired (due to potentially offending Amish viewers). The scene was cut out and entirely reshot, featuring Alton wearing a stereotypical Amish beard; entering a diner, discussing the dish, and ripping off the beard; next to other men wearing beards at the counter, before leaving.
The existence of the original cut scene was confirmed and discussed by Alton in his interview with the American Television Academy:
