Way back in the early 1990s I saw a cartoon anthology show released on a series of VHS tapes. The tapes were rented from a small local video rental store, which is no longer around.
It was an anthology series, featuring a number of 1940s and early 1950s animated shorts by Famous Studios, mostly Noveltoons and Popeye the Sailor.
The shorts came with a wraparound segment, which was new footage. - It is these segments I em looking for, alongside the show's opening and ending.
The wraparound featured a ship captain stranded on a deserted island, watching old cartoons, while waiting to be rescued.
These segments were very obviously made much more recently, alto their art-style was trying to copy the style of old 1930s/1940s cartoons.
The show’s opening tells the story of a ship captain, who may or may not have been a pirate, and who may or may not have an animal sidekick (a parrot or a monkey), as a disaster befalls his ship.
I can not remember the details, but said disaster may have been the ship being attacked by pirates, getting caught in a storm, being attacked by a whale, sharks, or a giant squid, or a combination of the above.
The captain ends-up stranded on an island along with his ship’s cargo, which turns out to be film reels of old cartoons.
From the opening theme, I remember the chorus, which goes along the lines of:
Aye Aye Captain Joe!
Ahoy, Ahoy Ahoy
Sail Away, Captain Joe
Ahoy, Ahoy Ahoy
(I em not sure if his name was Joe, but the name seems to fit the melody that I remember)
Here In my attempt at re-creating the song
captain joe.mp3 (513.46 KB)
The captain then spends his time in the in-between segments watching these cartoons, while also being harassed by a small local animal. Said animal may have been a monkey, an octopus, or a crab.
Over the years, I was able to hunt down many of the shorts that were featured on said compilation. Many of the shorts were based on Harvey Comics properties, like Casper the Friendly Ghost (shorts like The Friendly Ghost, There’s Good Boos To-Night, A Haunting We Will Go) , Little Audrey (Song of the Birds), or Baby Huey (Quack-a-Doodle-Doo, One Quack Mind), while others featured original Noveltoons characters like Blackie The Lamb (No Mutton fer Nuttin’, A Lamb in a Jam, Much Ado About Mutton), Herman the Mouse (Cheese Burglar, Saved by the Bell), Dog Face (A Self-Made Mongrel, A Mutt in a Rut), Lightning (Ups an’ Downs Derby), or Junior Owl (Teacher’s Pest). As said before, the compilation also featured a number of Famous Studio’s Popeye shorts, most notably the short She-Sick Sailors (where Bluto disguises himself as Superman).
Despite being able to identify the individual shorts however (or at least the ones that I remember), I was never able to find the compilation in question itself, nor any indication it ever existed.
Any help in uncovering this would be greatly appreciated.
