In early April 2003 there was a mysterious listing for an unannounced Nintendo Gamecube game called "Super Mario World X" on Nintendo.com. Several wrote this off an an April fools Day prank despite Nintendo never doing April Fools Day pranks on their Website. It stayed up for a while before being removed. Long enough for a few sites to pick it up and question what it was. Any attempt to look for information about it turns up nothing unless there is an archive of the Website from around that time. I believe IGN were one of the ones who brought it up. There were no upcoming Mario games at the time it could have been and this is what peaked peoples interest. Does anyone remember this?
We've had one fake Mario thread and another questionable Nintendo thread both created by guest users in the span of a couple days so I remain skeptical with this thread as well.
However I love discovering old game rumors no matter how weird they might be and if Nintendo actually did put up a fake game on their site, that would be worth documenting lol
I did a decently thorough look on Nintendo's old website and IGN's old news section from 2003 but didn't find anything. I definitely could have missed it but if it was actually present on Nintendo's site then it must have been hidden pretty well. It might not have been listed in the usual places though cause I don't think the game ever existed and I don't think there's any chance of it being real
Something else to consider is how IGN has made up fake stories before so without a screenshot from Nintendo's website I wouldn't be convinced the game was actually listed. No matter how you look at it, Nintendo listing an intentionally fake game on their site is so out of character.
And like I said before I'm not convinced it was actually real so it had to be an April Fools Day joke
Edit: I did some more looking around on old Mario fansites that I knew posted rumors back in the day and found this- www.sm128c.com/april2003/
A fake rerelease of Mario 64 Ultimate Edition for GameCube, posted on April 1st 2003. Maybe IGN mistook something like this as fact and reported on it? Couldn't find any mention of a Super Mario World related game.

I think this is a bit of a stretch, honestly. I wouldn't doubt they would accidentally mistake an April Fool's prank for a real upcoming game, but Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World are very different games lol.
I vaguely remember something like this. I believe it was posted under the Master Games List which listed all the released and upcoming games. Most wrote it off as a Mistake or placeholder for another game.

The first thing I thought of after reading the topic was how IGN created that fake GBA Yoshi screenshot and posted it on their forums for publicity. Not only does that make them somewhat unreliable in general but maybe it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say they tried faking another game too.
Though I'm starting to doubt the legitimacy of this topic and all the other one that were posted recently about canceled games with next to no information about them. There was one about a Genesis Energizer Bunny game that was apparently mentioned in the Sega Visions magazine, I searched the archive.org collection for any text mentions of the game and came up with nothing.
However if this topic is real, I'm much less interested in finding it on IGN's site and much more interested in finding it on Nintendo's but like I said before that seems pretty hard to believe after having looked there myself and considering the legitimacy of this thread.

Honestly the most likely possibility if this was real is that it was some IGN publicity stunt, especially considering the purple Yoshi thing you brought up. On top of that, why would IGN report an upcoming Mario game before Nintendo would?
