Back when The Garfield Show was in production, there was going to be a scene in an episode that would have featured a voiced cameo from Orson Pig from U.S. Acres.
The scene was going to be featured in the episode titled "Down on the Farm", which was an episode about Garfield being forced to spend a week at the farm owned by Jon's brother Doc Boy. The scene would have involved Garfield complaining about farm life, only for Orson to walk in and tell him to stop complaining, and remarks "at least (Garfield) has still got a show".
The scene was first mentioned during a 2012 Animation Guild interview with Garfield writer Mark Evanier. He also mentioned that a 3D model for Orson was constructed, and that Gregg Berger (voice of Odie) reprised his role as Orson for one line.
However, the scene was deleted, and the reason being that there were countries the cartoon was airing in that had international laws that forbade talking pigs, and that caused the scene to be removed entirely.
Several years have passed, and I have recently become fond of Garfield and Friends in the past couple of months because of the show airing at 3am on Boomerang, and I happened to also take a liking to the U.S. Acres segments and characters(especially Wade Duck).
I'm not sure when I discovered the information about the deleted Orson cameo, but my interest in Garfield and Friends was strong enough to convince me to email Mark Evanier himself about the scene. Eventually, he did get back to me, and I would find out that the specific scene was never animated, but they did record the voice track for it. Sadly, Mark said he did not have a copy. Rather than continuing the conversation by asking who would have a copy or about the 3D Orson, I was just thankful Mark Evanier could take some time to answer me. I also did not ask Gregg Berger about the scene.
But my search isn't over. Knowing that there is audio for the deleted scene, and someone likely has the Orson model, part of me wants to ask Mark again about it. If these could turn up, I'd be rather happy. I'll be even happier if U.S. Acres is featured in any capacity in the upcoming Garfield cartoon on Nickelodeon. As for now, I am gonna end this transmission.
