Does the fact that most silent films are gone hurt you?

Absolutely. Though I know many here are just interested in nineties nostalgia, I think old films are important representations of a bygone era. Among the many pieces of lost media, I consider silent films the most frustrating ones, because given the fragility of the medium they were filmed, they are lost forever. Unless some copy shows up at the most unlikely place (as it happened with the original version of Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), which ended showing up at a mental institution (!!!) in Oslo), most of us will never see these recovered films in our lifetimes.

To me, the most tragic examples of lost old films are the animated movies by Argentinian director Quirino Cristiani, credited with making the first two animated feature films: El Apóstol (1917) and Sin Dejar Rastros (1918), the irony is big here, the title means "Without a trace". Cristiani was also responsible for the first animated feature film with sound: Peludópolis (1931). Even if they were just a footnote in animation history or they were not masterpieces, they are important for being firsts. Another silent movie I really regret being lost is The Power of Love (1922), considered the first 3D movie ever made. It was later distributed as a 2D film, but even that version is lost too. It would have been amazing to see how the 3D effect was achieved 100 years ago. 

Sadly, the two first movies were lost at a fire happened at his movie vaults in 1926 and the third one suffered the same fate. To make matters worse, supposedly part of the celluloid was used to make combs. The worst part of this is that the films were hugely successful in Argentina, but apparently no single copy survived from any of these exhibitions. I think someone must try to locate them, but after almost 100 years, it is just wishful thinking...

The 3D effect must've taken a few years to actually do. Plus, one other tragic loss of a movie was possibly the first movie to be a Best Picture nominee, The Patriot.

Look, I know it's a weird thing to compare it to, but I think the Alexandria burning incident is more similar to the amount of pre-2000s indie games we've lost, in that we don't really know how much is actually lost. With those silent films, while it surely is a lot more lost than found, at least we actually KNOW how much is lost. With the Alexandria burning incident, we unfortunately don't know how much has been lost to time.

Oh, & I'm not joking when I say that we really don't know how many pre-2000s indie games are currently lost. Probably somewhere around 60-80%, or about over a thousand of them.

Absolutely. As others said, there's so much historical stuff we've lost and will likely never, ever get back.

There were so many innovators who changed the game, like the directors who pioneered the various trick films in the late 1890s to the 1910s, the forgotten and unknown animators, and the filmmakers who made their nation's first genre films. For me, Japan's lost works always come to mind since they were hit by back to back loss with natural disasters and war that obliterated, presumably, all their silent films. With how things are, I wonder if there's other countries whose film history is just lost to time now and that would be so disappointing.
