Hey Folks
There's a little mystery going around the interwebs about a promotional character that no one seems to know anything about. I figured I'd start a thread over here so we could get some more eyes on it and a better discussion!
Here is the original Reddit post about this subject!
I saw that video yesterday! I suggested that the Tape Monster reminded of something Danny Antonucci would design (creator of Ed Edd n Eddy). Maybe because it looks so similar to Ed? At any rate, I couldn't find any proof he's ever done clay work.
I’ve been looking through Spy Kids displays for hours now and no matches. All the displays I’ve found have just been large variants of the poster with no 3D elements whatsoever.
Occasionally movies will have separate standees of characters so it’s possible there’s a standee out there of Juni with Carmen or by himself holding the figurine. Possibly even a small tabletop one of all the Fooglies figurines together. Whatever it may be, this display was obviously very limited and rare.

It bothers me how people are saying it's solved. Like, its only partly solved. Does anyone even know for sure that's it was made for the film? The toy is in 2 shots, why would it be on a display? The only reason I can come up with that it was supposed to play a larger part in the film and that idea was scraped at the last minute.

It's been years since I watched spy kids and this is a long shot: Maybe there could be a lead if it's referred to in the spy kids script? Even if it's not by name.. but maybe they used a key word that could give us a hint. Since there's only one screenshot with the figure barley visible I assume the specific figure isn't relevant to the movie plot and not described in depth. Are there any other toys in the movie that may have something in common with this figure?

Know any spy kid fanatics that know of any early draft?Could be of use?
It does seem like an oddly specific figure for a prop only briefly used in a movie. I have to wonder too if it was originally from something else or if it was supposed to play a bigger part initially.
By the way, when I watched the Whang! video before the mystery was solved, it struck me how the style was reminiscent of something sculpted by Lou Bunin (maker of the "Alice in Wonderland" adaptation where the character in my avatar is from; as you can see the head shape, features, and skintone are similar).
