This documentary aired on RTP2 in Portugal. It wasn't Portuguese, but it was dubbed. No idea what country it could be from. Aired for the first (and only?) time sometime between 2004-2008, so I would assume it was made between late 90s-2008.
It was filled with live-action reenactments and I believe each segment dedicated to each evolution step (known at the time of making in the documentary) seemed to tell a little story. I remember specifically the ending of the Homo Erectus segment, when the mate of the Homo Erectus we were following gives birth to a hairless baby. The narrator then says something along the lines of "Homo Erectus now knows his time is coming to an end.".
I was quite young, and I even remember recording it (although partially, didn't start recording until 10-15 minutes after it started) but a) I have way to many tapes, most unlabelled, and searching will be time-consuming and b) my player is broken. Plus, like I said, the beginning of the tape is missing, to any credits that showed up there would be gone (but the end credits would be intact. Please let them be intact).

Update: My father was tidying up some DVDs and my eye caught a human evolution docu with a man in a proto-human costume on the cover. It probably isn't it, but still worth a shot. Will update when I see the movie.
