At the beginning of the "Rainbow" episode "Social Behaviour", Zippy plays an instrumental rock song which I cannot identify, as I posted it on WatZatSong, but with no responses.
Sounds like it might be from some 80s cartoon intro, perhaps a French one. Other than that, I have no idea.
Sounds plausible, but I kinda doubt it. Might be a stock track from Bruton Music or something.
Just wondering, why do you think it could belong to a French cartoon? Do most French cartoons have themes in this style?
Because of stuff like Rahan: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWK_CGfYxzk It literally sounds as if it was going to be an alternate theme song for that show, but ended up being unused, but then was used in Rainbow around the same year.
Another possible theory is that this might be a karaoke version of some random rock song by some unknown band, perhaps an unknown British band.

I see. The second theory in this post sounds more plausible, as I kinda doubt theme of a French show that would be unknown to the UK would be used in a show that doesn't use this type of music otherwise.

based on what im hearing it sounds like a "musak" version of boomtown rats- Rat Trap
you know like in things such as wrestling how they make peices of music heavily inspired/ heavilly replicating a song but making it different enough to prevent copyright issues. a lot of TV shows would do things like this and i believe this is potientally what we are hearing here, either that or just a basic peice of music the show recreated to sound like the popular rock sound of the later 80's
i dont believe personally its actually a song in its own right/ a sample/clip from anywhere else
I thought that too, but again I doubt they would have created one piece of music in a genre for a show that (I think) otherwise never uses it. Although that does still make sense.

I'd think it was almost certainly a piece by Rod, Jane and Freddy. Rainbow had music in all sorts of genres; you can get an idea of some of the songs they made for the show here: www.rodjanefreddysongs.com/songslist.html

It's possible, especially since this particular episode has the trio in it (though their featured song is nothing like the rock piece). I might check that out sometime.
Maybe it was an instrumental of a song they previously performed in their own show?
