Thanks so much, GrigioGuy! Using the content you shared, I was able to combine the original broadcast footage with a higher-quality syndicated version of the episode (which contains footage not in the original airing) in order to produce a full 24-minute version of the episode in the highest quality available (to me, anyway). Additionally, I attempted to improve both the color/brightness and the sound quality of both recordings; I also corrected the frame rate of the original broadcast footage, and I stabilized the image in the places where the VHS tracking caused the picture to jump.

Note: The syndicated version has an annoying "Laff" logo throughout, but removing it would have been incredibly tedious, given the tools at my disposal. In fact, in one instance, when cutting back and forth between footage from the original broadcast VHS and the syndicated version, I actually brought that logo over onto the VHS footage for image consistency. (I personally found it less distracting than having the logo appear and disappear frequently.) Anyway, I hope everyone is able to enjoy this full "extended cut" of the lost Drew Carey Show episode.

Didn't realize this thread existed until now, I actually found that episode way back in like 2012. I found a post from someone on Sitcoms Online that made a post back in 2003 saying they had the original version on tape so on a whim I sent them a PM asking them if they could possibly upload it online and a few days later I see a post on that site saying that someone uploaded the original version to Rapidshare(RIP)and I downloaded it ASAP, definitely an exciting find. Not sure if I played a part in it or not but wouldn't be surprised if I did.

Not sure why the Polish community took issue with it, as someone who is of Polish descent myself I find it baffling, my grandfather and dad would've found it hilarious. This unfortunately wasn't the last time a scene in a sitcom would get changed for all reruns after they protested, an episode of the short-lived FOX sitcom "Back to You" had a line cut in reruns and the DVD release where one guy tries to encourage the Polish guy Gary to go bowling saying "Cmon it's in your blood like Kielbasa and collaborating with the nazis", a Polish group got up in arms about that(even though that line is accurate, some people in Poland did collaborate with the nazis)and FOX removed it, even though the person who said that line was known for being kind of insensitive and the show wasn't actually endorsing his reviews but whatever.

The original version of that episode has been on TV Vault for quite some time, might download and upload it on my IA account tomorrow.

This episode was preserved and upscaled on internet archive. The version on IA moved the musical intro after the cold open. As would have been the normal format.

The backstory to the controversy was included in Drew’s book. Drew’s take was it’s ok to make of the mentally ill but not polish folks? He disagreed but relented and let ABC alter the broadcast due to basically very few letters of protest ironically the letters came from the polish community in Ohio.

That's a good point, it's weird that so much of the other stuff on that show that pushed the envelope didn't cause controversy but this one minor subplot did. If I was Drew I would've told ABC hell no, changing it for all reruns over a few letters is bogus, then again Nick did the same thing for the Ren and Stimpy episode Powdered Toast Man where the scene of him burning the Declaration of Independence got removed from reruns after like three people called Nick to complain about it.

I have Drew’s audio book on a drive I will see if I can clip the audio that deals w this episode. Put in a drive link.

But Drew had a few “battles” w ABC and network censors. I have few articles and interviews saved about the show. I just found another article dealing an episode change the other day. I’m something of a TDCS nerd.

I actually joined this little corner of the internet to help w my search for something. I just need to get all of the information together before i post it.
