I'm guilty of this.

I remember falling into the same delusion of using a "lost media army" to find what I want. Everyone goes through that delusion of grandeur at some point.

In reality, it's not so simple. You can't just ask for the community to find something you want without greater context. People might be interested in it, but that's it, mild interest.

I've finally gotten past this mindset and have started my lost media search organically. I'm going through old documents to find contacts, contact information, etc. It's a beach to get this organized sometimes because the sources can be so disconnected. But I'm happy that I'm doing this on my own, it's exciting.

On the subject of ChatGPT: I am hoping and praying that people collectively gain a better understanding of what it actually is. A large language model. A text generator. As Google's search results have recently shown, it is absolutely zero percent useful as a source of factual information. And everyone expected that!

The mere thought of someone just using ChapGPT for stuff like this fills me with disgust.

One of the worst cascading effects of the "A Day With SpongeBob SquarePants" search is that it probably caused a lot of people involved in the production or preservation of "lost content" to become more reluctant with forthcoming information about lost media. The infamous MVD movie break in, some of the weird people contacting certain individuals involved in that project, etc. Idk, I have a feeling people become more wary with responding to lost media inquiries after that shitshow.

Yep. Personally I'm in the school of "what can be explained by malice can be equally explained by stupidity" thought; I think it was some shitty tax break scheme that the two stooges mostly forgot about and it was only kept running so they could claim it as a loss each year. They weren't expecting some rando on 4chan to post about it and start a massive internet search for it.

It has worked before! Lots of products get brief or even full time revivals, which I am glad about. If there's one thing I give props to the food companies they do seem aware when people want a product to return and know when the right time is to do it. I don't even see any media companies do it quite as well.

Adding onto this thread again; The absolute decline in quality of search engines in recent years, whether it be pushing out AI slop or becoming nothing but promoted content or lacking simple filtering systems. It makes it AWFULLY dreadful to research anything nowadays.

Check out my various posts about search engines in this thread (I should really copy paste it on pastebin or something). It's a shame that you kind of have to use multiple these days for getting good results but better than nothing.

I…. Never said that they’re bad people for that, what are you talking about? I’m just talking about cases of lost media where we know for a fact a more complete version exists, and sure we can halt the search at finding a temp cut of a tv show pilot (just for example), but it’s still best to keep it labeled “Partially Lost” so if a more finalized version surfaces, we can finally properly label it as found.

(Exceptions would be if the complete version of any given lost TV show pilot no longer exists, and the temp cut is all that survived.)

I ranted about this earlier in the thread. YouTube has become absolutely god awful when it comes to this stuff.

1. The filtering system on YouTube is completely half-assed. You can't select more than one feature, and some features such as "Only Show Unwatched videos" work inconsistently.

2. It used to be where all you'd do is plop in a search term and get relevant results separated by page. Nowadays, I have to go through unrelated videos I have already watched, YouTube shorts, etc. Why is any of this crap on the search results?

3. Results aren't even separated by page anymore. Who thought this was a good idea? Everything is now merged together and you have to keep scrolling down, which is a resource hog on the browser and makes keeping track of things more difficult. Even worse, videos will sometimes repeat themselves in the search results. Did you accidentally close your browser page? Tough shit, you have to scroll down to get back where you were again.

4. YouTube has become saturated with repetitive political content, spam, etc. This makes finding what I want even more of a pain in the ass.

YouTube Search = Trash.
